I'm moving to Culver City and wondering what LFS people recommend I check out. I'm going to be walking distance to Apex Aquariums and pretty close to "The Aquarium". Any others I should know about? What are the reputations of these two?

Apex aquariums is pretty sad if you ask me. The Aquarium is staffed with some pretty cool peeps and the fish are healthy. Prices are ok. I go to the Aquarium a lot and like to look at what they have and support their store.

I went to The Aquarium and Apex today. Thought I would give a follow up for anyone finding this thread. At both stores the staff was friendly and helpful but I wasn't into the loud music and incense burning smell at Apex. Apex had a good selection of fish, didn't see any sick/dying fish. They had some stuff I didn't see very often in SD, Dragon Wrasses, groupers and Batfish so that was cool. But next to no coral and very limited dry good selection but do carry some basic meds and what not. The Aquarium was a bit more my speed. It's a smaller store so not a huge selection but what they had looked healthy. I got some premixed SW and got home to find it at 1.020 so that was a bit disappointing. They probably just need to calibrate their refractometer. But I've got to aerate and heat the water anyways so not a huge deal to adjust it. Both stores had a bit more aptasia that I'm comfortable with. Some bryopsis and bubble algae was observed but nothing of epic proportions. All in all I'm very happy to have a couple stores with different strengths so close by.

I got the Red Sea water from The Aquarium and it was 1.024. You might want to check with them and see who's refractometer is off. I test with Vee Gee and calibrate every week

I meant to call them but never got around to it. I'm pretty confident my refractometer is on point. I calibrate it before every use.

Yesterday before they closed. I used a refractometer for years and calibrated every few months and found even calibrating it was off. My meter shows 1.026 but really was 1.032 and lost a few sps colonies. Now I have the vee gee and reference to milwaukee digital to confirm.

BTW Welcome to the WESTSIDE!!!! Be ready to pay arm and leg for everything. Lol J/k
