I like to see how hot Mag pumps run, I am looking at running a Mag 9.5 on the skimmer and a Mag 12 for the return. Mag owners have you notice a tank water temp change? If so how many deg? For reference my tank is 120gal & a sump 30x16x18

thanks for any help

they're hot for sure.... I had a 40g tank a year ago with a mag5 pump as the return.... in the summer I had a hard time keeping temps below 85F.... When I switch to the QuietOne pumps, temps were lowered to about 81F

I only a QO pump now on my 60g and I've never had temp issues even in the summer time.

Mag pump is a very reliable pump. Unfortunately, it gives some heat to your water. May be like couple of degree.
I used it for mixing saltwater.

If I were you, go with Eheim 1260 or 1262.

I have a mag 12 return pump. I dont know how much heat it adds, but with my return pump and skimmer I dont need to use a heater.

We use a mag 12 to mix water in a 55 gal drum and if we left it on over night its well over 5 degrees hotter then the container without a pump.

pump

Should i run it in or outside the sump?
I need to pick a pump for my return 1200gph and for my skimmer an AquaC EV-180.

Thanks

I ran a Mag 12 for about 3 years. Bullet proof and quiet BUT they run hot. I recently switched out to a pump w/the same output and my tank runs 2-3 degrees cooler in the same ambient temp.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will go with another pump and skimmer combo as I really don't want to have to run a chiller.

I agree, I run a 9.5 and it's pretty hot, but my tank has enough water for it not to affect the temperature that much. Very reliable.
