If you are looking for pumps that have manufacture defects (acknowledged by the company making them via email to me), clog all the time, and are COMPLETE GARBAGE, then look no further. They are horribly designed. I have 5 of them. Trust me, I know!! The fins rub on the end of the shield causing groves and motor seizing. Calcium builds (due to poor seals) up on these from the inside over the course of about a week or two and will cause the pumps to stop turning. They clog up so bad that the bushing (the part that's supposed to act as a type of bearing) will literally start turning in the rubber sleeve that holds it. It will turn to the point that the bushing and rubber basically wear down to nothing. Additionally, the pump housing rubs against the magnet causing slices of the magnet (metal, which is HORRIBLE for an aquarium) to rub off and get into your precious water. It leaves groves in both the impeller magnet and the motor housing, which cannot be good for longevity or functionality. I have been emailing the company (Coral Vue...who is clearly full of illogical idiots) for months now, and all they offer is a store credit so that you can buy more garbage products from them that will fail and possibly cause your entire system to crash. Oh and they won't give you any credit until you send them the product back (meaning you have to buy a replacement pump while you wait for however long they decide they wish to take to credit you). So, unless you like spending hours and hours every single week or two cleaning your pumps, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT PURCHASE ANY PRODUCTS FROM CORAL VUE!!!!!

How often do you clean and service your pumps? So all 5 of them had this problem? How old are they?

Why would coral vue refund or send you credit without receiving the product back?

Lets see some pictures!

Yes. Every one of them had the same problems. They are all less than one year old. Some haven't even been used for more than like a month or two before clogging up the first time. I literally had one that I cleaned spotless and even did a citric acid dip too. It clogged within two weeks.

Why would coral vue refund or send you credit without receiving the product back?

Why? Because they literally admitted to me that the issue was caused because of manufacture defects. Why should I, as the consumer, be held liable for problems caused by manufacturer's? These defects should all have been spotted during a quality assurance review or by testing products before selling them to the mainstream public. The consumers should not be the guinea pigs. Good customer service would mean sending a new pump to replace the defective one and including a prepaid shipping label to return the defective items after the swap has been made. I can't speak for everyone, but I don't just keep an extra $200 pump laying around for every pump that I own. And if the defective pumps don't get returned, then the consumer could be charged.

Lets see some pictures!
what do you want to see pictures of? the magnets that have shaved off? I have two of them already that have done this out of the 5 I own. The company doesn't even dispute that these are caused by defects. Not sure how the picture will help, but I can provide one if you simply don't believe my story (but not sure why I would go through all of this otherwise)

I think he is trying to gain info for other reefers that may be experiencing similar issues to possibly troubleshoot for them or you. Cody is not trying to defend coralvue or maxspect, nor am I. Pictures just always provide more understanding/clarity.

The issues you are speaking of? How old are they? I own a Maxspect Gyre XF250 and want to know what to watch out for. These pumps are sold by just about every retailer. CoralVue distributes other brands, including Ecotech which aren't void of their share of problems either. Just get something else with the credit? Since only two of them are bad I'm not sure why you sending them back and then getting credit won't work?

Here are pictures of what happen to the bushings (holding the ceramic rod on the opposite end of the motor). They clog, melt, wear down, inner and outer parts slip apart, and they break in half eventually as shown in the last picture. I recently cleaned them before going out of town for a week. I got them spotless so they wouldn’t clog when I was gone. Luckily it took 10 days to clog. That’s how sad these products are. Having to clean a power head every ten days is absurd!!

What up bean. I have 5 of the 350s. Every single one of them has the exact same problem. The bushings clog up. The last time it literally only took 10 days from me cleaning it to the point of it basically being brand new until it clogged again. The ceramic shafts have very little clearance between the shaft and the bushing. So any tiny little bit of build up causes them to clog and eventually stop all together. Also, the magnet will get build up after a very short time and clog too. And this is on top of the fact that the magnets appear to have had manufacture defects (CoralVue told me this), which cause the magnet to rub against the motor housing (and the magnet shaving off in your tank). Pretty quality huh?

Regarding sending them back...CoralVue sent me ONE new motor to replace the five that I have. And that replacement ended up having the exact same issues as stated above. After finding out about the manufacture defects, I asked them to send me 5 replacements, and I would send them all of the old pumps. They wanted me to send every single pump back individually (one at a time). That means 5 boxes, 5 trips to the post office, extra miles on my car, extra gas, extra time, etc. I think you get the idea. I asked why they can't send me all 5 pumps first (so I have something to replace the ones I am using with) and then I could send them back the old ones. The only answer that I appear to have been given is that they don't trust that I will return the old ones. Like I have use for pumps that are garbage and clogging every 10 days? I mean I sent them multiple videos of the clogging issues. If anyone shouldn't be trusted its CoralVue. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!

I have Gyres on multiple tanks and no issues whatsoever. Some even hocked up to my Wave Engine. if anything that made them work even better. However I am big on maintenance on my aquarium they get cleaned and logged. sorry to hear you do not do that.

i have an issue w/ the bushings seizing to the ceramic shaft myself. seems like i have to dip them ever month or so in citric acid. Coralvue did send me a few replacement shafts assembly kits though so i just alternate them out ever now and then.

My diagnosis is that the higher the level of alkalinity/calcium u maintain the faster these clogs happen. Citric acid works wonders but can take hours or overnight to loosen up some of the bushings due to the very small clearance between bushing and ceramic rod. It almost becomes like super glue. Anyway, I’m peacing out of this conversation. Good luck everyone.

Thank you!

Nah, I mean on full blast with all of them, yes lol but you’ll have ultimate control and different flows. I love the surface flow for gyres.

I do think that the gyre is better suited for imitating ocean waves and as such superior to the echotech VorTech
