Hey Todd; here is a wiki explanation to give you more knowlage

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_halide_lamp

about the bulb; Aqurist have different preferece;
1, For growing most uses 10,000 kelvin (10K)
2, With a little hint of blue 14K
3, To make color stand out 20K

Reflector is also important on how you consentrate the focus of the light beaming down to your tank.

wattage is also as important as the rest of the componentI would suggest about 7 to 9 watts/gallon

Ballast could be one of the two

Magnetic: efficient tent to overdrive the bulb and shorten the bulb life but more intense

Electronic: more efficient specially in electrical consumption and will give you the exact rating. a little gentler to the bulb.
