I just banned 2 spammers last night. And this morning, I see 3 more spam threads already up. So they are just using bots that somehow can get through the new user registration process. And that can only be changed by admin @EyeReef So not sure if can do that, or need to find some help for that.

I messaged the admin and see what can be done, or is he needs help with upgrading the new user verification system.

Thanks for your service - keep up the great work!

There is no spam on R2R (that I know of). Either they have a lot of mods to manually block or have better auth verification system? Worthwhile asking Rev for ideas? Just thinking out loud….

So to clarify, you are only banning spam

So who are the new mods and what are they doing?
. I’ve been jumping on in the mornings and getting rid of overnight spam. It appears that’s when we get hit with it mostly.

I’m still new to this so getting used to how much we have to work with.

I wondering if anyone Is going to enforce forum rules and bring in a little order. Maybe that will drive sponsors back and get this more active. I for one don’t like rev and rather see this board thrive again

If the problems on the boards are just with spammers and the enforcement of the selling rules, there is other forum software that can alleviate that.

Invision has a great software, would look just like this one. They ban spammers across all of their client boards at once and the software allows the user to set rules such as no posting (or even seeing) specific forums until a minimum post count has been reached.

Invision also offered automated backups, as well as IT/Admin support.

They can also handle the collection and automation of monthly dues, and will automate the member status (something that used to take us quite a long time to do by hand).

It's been 10 years since I ran through the process with them; back then they were fantastic to work with.

The "verification" on the registration page is quite trivial.
Which one of these belongs in a reef aquarium? Monkey, dog, cat, clownfish
We should be really be using CAPTCHA to prevent low effort bots from accessing platform.

The new user authentications needs to be boosted by the admin. So the mods can only ban spammers or delete threads and give warnings after a thread has been created. Mods does not have access to new user authentication, only the admin. If the admin can add some better authentication or captcha during new user registration, it will stop most of the spam.

once I hear back from @EyeReef we can see what he can do. Maybe it is a tech thing or money thing, not sure. Stopping spam would be a good start. I also think security is the most important thing.

Looks like we already have spies inside the forum and they are toying with us. There are 8 spams this morning alone!

I’m rooting for all you mods out there trying to make a difference. I do like SCR and hope this will thrive.

What about enabling captchas when creating threads if a user has under 5 or 10 posts and not just on user registration?

Thanks guys for all the input. I tried all the integrated spam control option with this forum software and none have been really effective. Will look into third party software/mods for better control.
