Calling all clown experts. Can someone explain to me why is it that every time I put in any type of ocelaris clowns, within a few days they die :( only ocelaris, i have skunk clowns and they’re ok. What mystery killer do I have in the tank that only affects occis?

Skunk clowns. I'm not joking. It is extremely difficult to mix different species of clowns in one tank - particularly if one group is already well-established in the tank.

Aren’t you suppose to put all new clowns in at the same time that way no one has an advantage over area. New clowns + new turf = free for all. They all have same disadvantage. Not one pair would be more dominant than the other.

If that makes sense ? Makes sense to me.

I had a pair of orange skunks in the 90's that were so aggressive in a 120 that they would beat the crap out of ANY fish I introduced into the tank. If the fish was small, they would grab it and stuff it into their anemone - game over. Eventually gave them away to a professional breeder friend of mine, who in turn passed them on to another breeder. They are still alive - breeding like clockwork - but all owners said the same thing "boy are those fish MEAN!"

Sure, it's a free-for-all. What that means is that the fish will fight until the largest two beat the crap out of, and kill or chase out of the tank, all other clowns.

I don't know why people have such a fascination about mixing clowns when they are known to be some of the most territorial and aggressive fish in the ocean. It's like - the more people warn you not to do it the more people kill fish trying.

on top of that, adding clown "harems" should all be tank bred vs Wild. Unless the tank is pretty large, I still believe there shouldn't be more than a pair. I don't think it really works out too well in the long run but that's just my .02

Be careful when mixing clowns.
It all depends on each of their territories and the territorial of each of the different clowns.
Each and every clown is different. There will never be the same clown again.
I have experienced from both mix vs. non-mix and mix vs. mix = doesn't matter!
