So last week I bought 5 gallons of premix salt water from lfs to change for my gf's nano. I used about 3 gallons on an 8 gallons nano. I didnt bother to check salinity of the store bought water because they are a reputable store and I have been using their water for almost 6 months now with issues. We then left for vacation and came back to a tank that is on the verge of crashing. I tested salinity of the tank and it is at 1.015 and then I tested the remaining 2 gallons of store bought water and it is at 1.012!!!! Luckily her fish didnt die but most softies are almost gone and the rbta is looking bad. I slowly raised salinity back up over the course of a few hours and a small water change. What should I/you do in this situation regarding the lfs?

My vacation was 5 days and her dad was in charge of top off duty. Basically, the lfs sold water to me that was super low in salinity.

I would ask her dad if he added frag water to that remaining 2 gallons first.

If you are sure that the water from the fish store you have left is 1.015, and are sure that it hasn't been tampered with, I would take it back. Show it to them and ask for a discount or free water to correct the problem. Sounds pretty low, doesn't hurt to bring it to their attention.

If they deny it ask them to test their water in front of you and please report here if they still think they're right with water that low.

Oh and most importantly this is why you need to make your own water. So that you know the TDS and the salinity.

The remaining 2 gallons was in my car and was not tempered with. I will mix my own from now but its usually easier for me to just pick up 5 gallons and use it for a couple weeks.

If its a reputable store then I'm pretty sure they didn't intentionally run low salinity. They're people and they eff up. But yeah I'd def go back and ask for replacement water. Make sure you bring up salinity super slowly so you don't shock the fish.
