Pumps usually have some type of internal thermal shut off and/or over current protection. It sounds like your pump is cutting off for that reason. Ive found that older pumps can sometimes experience water creep between the cord and the potting resin on the motor block....or through some other leak path. Looks like this shark pump is actually a sicce syncra motor block. I wonder if you can find the same size standard syncra pump and retrofit it with the skimmer impeller. Or better yet find a suitable dc pump replacement

It’s actually a really nice pump. It’s the old askoll red dragon pumps. It’s worth the 300 bucks if they have it.

I don’t get the allure of a dc pump on a skimmer, but you could likely modify a jeabo pump if you have the external pump model. Otherwise you can’t do an alternative

I was gifted an Aquamaxx Cone - S skimmer and the pump didn't work without taking the intake apart each time it shut off, so I bought a slightly bigger DC version pump (Jebao DCA4000 needle wheel version) and made my own venturi nozzle and it's a beast. After the initial break-in, the pump is dead silent and pulling just as much, if not more than the previous AC pump, plus I can fine tune it unlike the AC version.

Did you document your build? Would love to see how you did it.

No, but I can post a couple pics of what I used to make it. Fortunately, the dc pump I used had a threaded female intake, so I found a matching PVC fitting. Let me see if I can find the pics.

Here’s the skimmer in action with an elongated tube to fit my old sump while I work on my tank. I bought some 3/8” plastic rigid tubing for my skimmer cups to make drains, so I used a small piece for the air intake to make the Venturi. I used the white PVC fitting to test the position of the air intake to maximize air, once I found the right spot, I then used a black fitting to match the pump. I had an old uniseal that fits snugly inside the PVC fitting to reduce the water intake, which really helps create finer bubbles and may be necessary to use, as most Venturi’s have a slightly smaller intake.
The Venturi that came with the pump didn’t even fit the intake at all, which is weird. I’m sure I could’ve cut it down and made something to fit that, but the PVC fitting worked perfectly for my application.

Very cool and resourceful build! You're right, you need that constriction in the intake tube to create the reduction in pressure to create the vacuum (venturi) effect. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has already created a volute for that pump so you can 3D print it in the future.

That's what I was going to say. With 3D printing, it should be simple to make any pump to fit a any skimmer body.
