I'm planning on building a 20g nano with a 20g sump/fuge. Over the next few months i'll be getting a 20g tank (that will be my display), nova extreme 24" 4 T5 tube fixture, and a remora c skimmer. I already have a 20g that I feel I can DIY it into a sump/fuge from reading and watching allot of DIY videos on this build.

I know I would need a pump for the return from the sump to the tank. but what i don't know is what other equipment I would need, to build this 20 nano. Like powerheads, etc etc, so I hope people here can give me some insight on this part.

lets take powerheads for an example... how big would be to big for a 20 nano reef not have sand be blowing everywhere? what type of power head and how many?

Before I forget I want to say I use to keep both FW and SW fish only tanks in the past for 7 years until I got out of the hobby. Even back then I wanted a reef. So I'm getting back into the hobby but this time going straight to reef tank.

Thanxs for the welcome everyone

welcome....in terms of powerhead..what is your budget?
my budget is very limited.

to show roughly how limited if something cost about $200 it would take me about 5 or 6 months to save that much, unless i get a little lucky with a bill comes in for a little bit lower in the amount due.

the above setup I have in lay-way at my lfs. So right now what free money I have after bills and other small stuff I need for the month I put it toward it. hoping to get that stuff in november if I'm lucky, if not then it will be december for sure.

Thanxs for the offer but the skimmer I have already AquaC Urchin In Sump Protein Skimmer w Drain Fitting + Maxi_Jet 1200 as far as the return pump I'm not sure yet on it. Because I don't know how much head room I'll be dealing with. Planning on build a stand, so I'm not sure exactly how high to the top of the tank will be yet, and how i will layout the plumbing.

But maybe someone can answer me this question on the return plumbing. To figure the headroom I know the vertical height, but at my lfs my friend told i also have to count how many 90's or 45's is used in that return line. So how many feet do i have to add in with these type of bends. I was told add 3 feet, but I feel that is just a tad bit to much.

While I'm thinking of it, my friend said he can drill the holes on the 20 and he can guarantee me that he won't break the glass, since he drills the tanks at the lfs. so what size hole should I have for the overflow and what size hole for the return?
