Hi everyone! I’m new to Cali and I have recently purchased a Red Sea Max Nano to start. I have been in reef keeping since 2012. I have attached two photos of my Dream tank I started and kept in Texas prior to my relocation to SoCal. I made the light box from scratch for this 120 gallon DSA rimless custom tank, made the sump, DYI Plummed everything, and it was thriving. I hope to do the same with my newly acquired nano! Hope everyone is having fun with their reefing!

Cheers!

So is it to early to see your filtration?
It is, sadly. I only have the tank put together, the lighting programmed, and the live sand. My 7 Stage RODI unit is being delivered today as well as an upgraded auto top off system. I know I will need something more robust with more water storage than what came with the tank. I’m currently looking for a good place to get live rock. I haven’t been too impressed with the local stores. Thinking about buying dry like I did for my last tanks and cycling. We shall see!

Updated pics. I still have some cable management to do, but I’m waiting on my decision to get a small power head. I also epoxied some rock this morning so it’s still clearing a bit. I am going to cycle for some time to build up a good environment even though I’m using live rock and sand. I’ve always had luck with this approach.

7 stage BRS RODI plus system
20 gallon Red Sea Max
AI HD nano.
Upgraded auto-top off: Tunzi Osmolator
Upgraded RODI reservoir: 5 gallon IM. (Drawer came broke in shipment but BRS is sending me another).
Stock Red Sea rear sump, skimmer, sock, and return pump.
2 under cabinet battery LED lights.
About 20 pounds of rock.
15 pounds of Fiji Pink live sand.

Tank Update:

After “cycling” (I used live rock, sand, and seachem so very short cycle) for about a month, I’ve added a skeleton clean-up crew and some clowns!! They are getting along “swimmingly :). I really like the look of having two different varieties so I went with the below:

Frostbite
Gladiator

I’ve been mulling over the idea of adding a HOB fuge or a makeshift fuge in place of the stock Red Sea skimmer in the rear sump. After literally a month of throwing around the idea of even adding a proper fuge below the tank via overflow box, I’ve just decided to keep it simple. I plan on mostly LPS, so a dirtier tank is not undesired. After getting super deep in reefing with my prior DSA 120, I just want to be simple. I did go ahead and add some ceramic bio balls in the space below the skimmer for some extra surface area, and before adding the fish I did a massive cleaning. It’s spick and span minus the two bio balls I’m attempting to seed with critters before throwing this in the back as well! Also, the front pic of the tank has reflections of Christmas lights. Don’t judge me!
