My Tank Build
#1
I've got the bug to to change tanks. Currently have a 100g Peninsula tank and looking to go with. 185 peninsula 60x30x24 pretty sure my dream tank.

My problem is how do I go about swapped ng systems? I would love to keep my corals and fish for the new system but I don't have extra equipment and can't keep them in the current system as that where the new set up will go.

What have some of you done to deal with this issue? I'm probably about 6-12 months out from actually moving forward but would like to be ready when the time does come.

I jsut did this a mont ago 135 gal penis > 225 gal

What I did was setup the 225 in the garage and did the plumbing and ran it with tap water and a cheep Rio return pump for about a month. Gave me a chance to tweek it and fix minor drips and such. The key is to setup the plumbing so it can come apart and go back without cutting, this may take some ingenuity

Then I got a bunch of friends... well, actually I beeped aeveryone I know and evean many I don’t know to come help me.

Lowered the water level in the old tank and scooted it to the center of the living room

Then brought the new tank and put it in it’s place

I refilled the old tank and saved that transfer for another day.

I took filter socks, media and rock from the old tank and got it started with the bacteria. Cycled water through the sump and back into the overflow box. I left the main tank dry until just before the big transfer day

Did water changes on the old tank but instead of discarding the water it went in the new tank.

Whole prosess tool about a month but I had 0 losses and 4 weeks later the coral are growing amazing and all the new dry rock has large specks of coralline alage all over it.

Good luck!!

I'd say start buying ur live rock sooner than later and some rubbermaid bins. You'll need the bins later to do the transfer but for now you can start curing the live rock. When the time comes, drain the tank and save as much good water as you can. Then move the coral and rock into the bins. break down the tank and slide the new one in. Toss the old sand out and only use new thoroughly rinsed sand. Then start the transfer. If you need time to swap the sump equipment over then don't sweat it or rush it. Simply toss in the heater in the DT and have powerheads running. Ur tank will be fine without filtration for a bit.
