i'm wanting to start a sump on my 60g to eliminate the hang on filtration and up the volume of water, as well has make it a little safer at dosing. i was wondering if anyone has a do it yourself overflow or if they recommend just buying one at the lfs, or used. this is what i'm thinking of doing.

I have a NIB overflow for $60.
I *believe* the specs are equivalent to this one:

But I'd have to check.
I can even bring it down in a couple weeks when I go to OB.

I don't recommend buying one retail because there's always one around for much cheaper and I doubt you'd be able to make one worthwhile for the money or time of just buying one used. I see used ones for around $40-50 if you wanted to save some more money but that won't be delivered to your door.

I should have a sump available soon, too. Probably even by the time I come down.

Personally I would rather drill the tank to have a built in overflow that way you don't have to worry so much about your siphon breaking.

For as long as your tank is not tempered glass everything should be fine.

overflow

the cpr overflows are real nice, no more tubes, the water siphoning is real smooth and also very little to no real big air bubbles getting in. mine worked great..

thanks for the input, ive been debating whether to drill the glass or go with the overflow, my wallet says the overflow is a safer bet. and ive decided to buy one instead of making my own.
