Any one running ozone?

Over the past year and a half my reef has taken a huge hit. All my fault. Every time i fixed one issue another poped up. For the last 8 months my tank has been on a downward spiral and i just about lost all my sps. My first thought was chemical warfare because my nems and softies were multiplying like crazy. Not knowing what to do next I started looking into ozone and pulled the trigger.

When I installed the ORP monitor i got a reading that fluctuated between 60 and 90. After some research I realized that these readings were unususally low. I ran ozone and got my ORP levels up to about 350 and things started looking up but my sps still looked really bad. I decided to take the sump out and clean every piece of equipment. Well, that's when I found my problem. I found a rusted out screw fused to a hidden corner in my sump.

I ended up performing a 100% water change (not recomending this) and chanced a total tank crash. I got lucky though. No crash but now i see some cyano. I ran the tank Berlin style for 3 weeks then i started adding the rest of my equipment.

I've been running ozone on this reset for 2 weeks now and man! What a difference. The surviving sps in my tank looks like poop but I'm getting really good polyp extension. Im even starting to see color returning to some sps.

If any one is running ozone, I'd like to know your experience and what I should look out for.

Wow eve that sucks to here. I know your sps was alway banging. I’ve never used ozone so I can’t comment on thing to expect. But I have heard that ozone is hard on plastics and can cause them to get brittle. I know my skimmer was made for ozone to run through it tho. He designed the skimmer with a added lid to filter out the ozone by filling the add on with cabon.

Ozone can be detrimental to some plastics, and even humans if not used carefully, but it can also benefit tanks if you use it correctly. What do you feel is causing this drop in ORP for you?

I never used ozone Bc I was scared of it yeh call me weak but ozone great if ur having random rtn issues that might be bacteria related, but for color you might want to feed more since ozone kinda strips all the tanning color out making your lights more intensive to the corals. Dosing aminos or get your nitrate up

I think it was the rusted screw that lowered the ORP. Since I've done the 100% water change i haven't had any drops in ORP (except for the times I dosed vitamin C or Peroxide). With out ozone my ORP has been between 250 and 290. With ozone I've been keeping ORP at about 360.

I know that ozone is hard on plastics, even if they are made for ozone they will eventually get brittle.

I was scared of it too untill i saw that they use ozone generators to clean CPAP machines.

That's the next thing I'm not sure about. Ozone binds and breaks up molecules because of the extra oxygen attom. Would'nt it do the same to amino acids?

BRS says that ozone doesn't last in salt water too long so i would gess that all the effects happen in the reactor or skimmer and not in the DT. Does that make sense?

Like there different grades of steel some contains other chemicals properties that is not pure that can be caustics in our saltwater environment as it oxidizes
