I noticed I’ve been seeing a lot of tanks with wave makers on the back glass, can anybody explain what the benefit is to that?

Strange concept to me since it seems like there’s less space for the water to flow and it would be a lot more direct and stronger? I know obviously different needs in each tank but I’ve seen it mostly sps tanks, mixed reefs, lps dominant tanks

My Tank Build
#4
Here’s my experience. On my 150 I started with 2 mp40 on the back wall facing forward. I was never happy with the flow but I didn’t want to tank to look like it had ear muffs. I eventually added 2 nero5’s on the back wall along with the mp40. I still wasn’t really happy. I eventually ended up ditching the mp40s and going with 3 Nero5’s on the back wall. I was somewhat ok with this flow for a bit but felt like I was missing something. So I added two 2k gyres on the side at the water line, with the ice cap controller. I was pretty happy with this flow for a bit. But eventually I started to notice corals at the top of the tank were growing towards the front glass and the corals at the bottom of the tank were growing away from the front glass. I then knew I needed to change things up. So I ditched the neros and when all gyres. Two 2ks mounted vertically pointing at each other in the back corners. Then two 4ks mounted on the side in the middle at the water line also pointed at each other.
The 2ks run an alternating gyre mode 24/7. With 5 min alternating during the day and 10min at night.
The 4k run pretty much random mode between 50% at night at 90% during the day.
I completely love the flow on this 187g tank

Does have anyone have mp40s on both the back and side? Just seeing if it’s counter productive
