Heyo! I’ve been lurking on here since 2020 and realized I don’t think I’ve ever posted a full tank shot or build thread. So, here’s what I’m working with! Photography isn't my strong suit(nor is cleaning the glass), sorry :p

image0.jpeg

Equipment:
-IM 30 gallon long
-2 AI Prime(1 HD, 1 regular)
-IM Mini Skimmer
-IM Media reactor with biopellets(I dont think they do a damn thing)
-ReefBreeders Prism ATO
-Media bag with carbon and GFO that gets changed close to never
-DIY trickle filter/algae reactor (MY SAVING GRACE)

Livestock:
1 Maitai Clown
1 Royal Gramma
1 b+w molly
1 banggai cardinal

Some love for the Inverts:
-1 fire shrimp
-numerous Bulla gouldiana
-1 elephant slug
-a metric ton of Cerithideopsis californica
-another metric ton of Nassarius fossatus
-a third metric ton of Tegula gallina
-A few Mossy Chitons
-Stylea clava tunicates
-Stylea plicata tunicates
-some unknown chain tunicates
-skeleton shrimp

For corals, I've mixed in a little bit of everything from torches to acros, acanthos(thanks Jose!), galaxea, montis, mushrooms, lobos, hammers, and more! The tank has been running for close to 2 years now and things are finally pretty filled in and stable. It was a hell of a time getting to this point with my lackadaisical standards. We've definitely had a few losses, but nothing too major, and it survived a move 6 months ago just fine!

If you're curious about anything else or have some tips to improve things a bit, feel free to chime in

For the love of Fish,
Let's see a pic of the DIY trickle algae reactor, please.

I didn't see "sump" on there. Do you have a sump?

Thanks a lot! It was certainly a hell of a ride getting to this point haha. tons of ups and downs, my ugly phase was pretty bad. BUT I'm pretty happy with the outcome :)

No sump! The IM tanks are all in one, just a lil filter chamber in the back.

the algae reactor isn’t very impressive looking, just harvested it today too so not much on it at the moment.
This baby is cheap, easy to setup, and does serious damage on nitrates/phosphates. I considered ditching the media reactor and making it longer, might still do that in the future, but for now I’m rocking the mini

Nice tank. The left meat coral (sorry not big on LPS) is huge and happy.
That’s my prized possession :giggle: it’s an Acanthophyllia. Got two of them from the local legend joseserrano :p
I let my parameters get really bad for a couple months and almost killed it, but it clung to life and I nursed it back to health with some regular feeding and overall better tank care. You can see in the photo all the exposed skeleton underneath. Once the tank was back in check it sprouted a new skeleton on top lol

It’s been a while and I suddenly remembered I have a build thread that could use an update. Since my last post, I’ve had to tear down the tank, move it to my parent’s for a few days, then build it back up again due to getting my building fumigated. In the process, I sold the main chunk of rock on the left that was covered in mushrooms and branching GSP. To replace it, I’ve built up a pile of dead coral I collected on a trip to Indonesia over the summer.

i just did my first water change in about 1.5-2 months and I’m still not dosing or testing regularly. Just an eyeballed dose of alk when I happen to feel like they could use some. Seriously no measurement used lol. But somehow, the corals are happy as can be.

a few months ago I picked up a starry blenny to complete my stock list. Turns out he had more than his natural color pattern on him. An ich outbreak ended up killing everyone but my clown and inverts. I went “fallow” for about 2 months before just recently picking up a streaked wrasse and a new, baby lawnmower blenny. It’s been a few weeks and they’ve settled in nicely!

I’ve been sorta lucky so far with my coral in terms of not having issues due to dosing and I recognize that. Without total automation, there’s just no way in hell I’ll be able to test and dose on a proper schedule. As such, im starting to shift the tank more toward softies(if you have some snazzy leather frags, hit me up!). The only remaining SPS are a Hollywood stunner that can’t be killed, a standard red monti that’s slowly being killed by a torch, a digitata, a chunky setosa frag, and some cyphastrea.

Ive picked up a couple long tentacle leathers, some Japanese pink nepthea, and moved a hammer and scoly from my 5 gal to be nursed back to health. Things are looking great, the corals are happy, and it’s been pretty maintenance free for a while now! Not sure what I’ve done to keep the tank happy, but it seems like it’s nicely in balance at this point.
