After calling about 16 places over the weekend looking for a Purple Tang to add to my quarantine tank, I called Rainbow Pet in Arleta and they had one so I went for the long drive up there. WOW was I pleasantly surprised. Great selection of Freshwater and Saltwater fish and supplies. Very knowledgeable staff and their fish were very healthy with no signs of illness. I got a 2 inch purple tang for a great price and got 2 peppermint shrimps for a few aiptasias that have sprung up in the last 2 weeks. They informed me that they treat their saltwater fish with prazipro and ich-x and even showed me the gallon containers of each. I was very impressed by this store's selection of inverts and corals also and the cheap prices on them. Surprised we don't hear more about this store like we do all the lfs' in Orange County.

Here's picture of my new beauty in QT. Thanks Rainbow Pet for such a healthy specimen that after 20 minutes in my quarantine tank was eating pellets and mysis very well.

best store for fish in the Valley

Rainbow pet sells the best fish in the San fernando Valley! Its where I get most of my expensive fish (tangs, angels, australian species), with a >90% 1-yr survival rate for me. Their prices are more than reasonable.

They also sell Instant Ocean 200gallon box for $30. You know, the cheap this forum is pushing for reef tanks.

I believe the San Fernando Valley Reefers club would support my high opinion of this store.

best part was that I put in the Peppermint shrimps (2) and they went straight for the rocks. Next day when the lights came on, the 3 aiptasias were gone. First experience with peps and they really did their job.

Cool, Jesse, I've had 2 pepps for the last 2 months that have never even touched my aiptasias. Worst part is reading on berghias, the 2 species don't mix.

Thanks, I have a filefish, and my new lemon peel is rumored to eat aiptasias, but if neither of them do their job, I will take you up on the offer...

I went there last monday for the first time. They were friendly, honest--looked up when the shipment came in, prices were visible, etc. I bought some dry goods and even asked how much the "cheap crap" IO cost, lol. They also carry TM for those who like low alk....I'll be back for sure.

j/k about the TM, sort of, well naw I guess I wasn't.

we agree Rainbow Pet in Arleta is an excellent, family-run LFS. and not the one in Shaumburg, Illinois, LOL, I actually went to Shaumburg a couple times since i have cousins in the area!

my point with IO is that it wasnt intended for use with the type of SPS reefs people now commonly grow. If so, why did the same company come out with Reef Crystals afterwards?

the gurus on this forum that have great reef tanks with IO could probably make it work with any salt.

the learning curve I commonly see is people start fish-only marine tanks with IO because it is ubiquitous and cheap. Then they start reefing, have to switch to another salt for better calcium, trace elements, lower silicates, etc. and have sucess. Then, downgrade to cheaper salts when they know what they are doing. It would be against my conscience to recommend this salt to a reef newb.

myself, I have used most salts on the market and never had a tank crash. If I did I wouldnt blame the salt. Its just a dumb plastic bucket with white stuff in it... im the evolved living thing dumping it into my tanks.

keep in mind:

even Rainbow Pet, Arleta doesnt recommend IO for SPS reefs, they use Reef Crystals, Brightwell or Coralife.

the manufacturers of IO recommend their Reef Crystals for the increased calcium on their own website.

Drs Foster Smith uses Reef Crystals for their facility.

Good points, Smarty Pants(lol). I plan to switch back to IO because I already test and dose accordingly. So why would I pay more for something I do anyways? Agreed that no salt will crash your tank. I have heard of people blaming TMP for crashing their tanks because of the new low alk, but if those people tested like they should, they would have caught it way before it caused any problems. Just my .02

Ultimately, I am willing to dose a bit more and save $30+ over these higher level salts...
