I use a ball valve on the line feeding the float valve so I can turn off the water if I need to do maintenance or clean the valve. Some people will drill a hole in their sump if you have an acrylic sump, but the eshopps kit avoids you having to drill a hole. You just have to put the reservoir higher than the valve and you’re good to go.

Gravity fed systems are super simple and reliable. I’ve been using them since the 80’s. And yes, salinity is stable. Usually the RO just trickles in over the course of the day. But you do need to make sure the float itself is free from buildup, etc and clean it once or twice a year, if not replace it. They’re not that expensive, so it’s easy to maintain.

My Tank Build

I use my 55g freshwater water barrel as my ATO reservoir. The Tunze osmolator pump sits on the bottom of my freshwater drum, and pushes water to my sump. I put the syphon break on the tubing inside the barrel. Tunze has a max run time of 10 minutes, so that won't do much to my salinity (big tank) even if it runs 10 minutes.

Not having to refill the ATO reservoir has been fantastic and great when you go on extended time away from tank. I have not touched my ATO / reservoir for over a year.

I don't use gravity fed systems because I would need the reservoir above my sump. I rather have my reservoir below my sump, so it doesn't accidentally drain into my sump if the float fails.
