Love these guys. Goofy. Generally pretty harmless. Found two of them on top of my ailing "rescue" zoas today, though, and in an abundance of caution, decided they gotta go. Maybe the zoas are just dying anyway and they're cleaning up, but I can't tell. Not much algae for them to eat, so maybe they are hungry. I have 4, maybe 5 of them (still looking for the 5th one). Let me know if you want to stop by and get them! They will be missed, but not as much as my zoas.

Well, I may have condemned them too soon. I found the missing exosphere zoas floating around. Can't say for sure if the other zoas were just nearly dead and being cleaned or targeted by the hermits. So instead I'm going to put them on a magnetic rack and see how they do.

Those look like scarlets, which are less murderous than other hermits and my favorite hermit to have. They were probably just cleaning up, which is what they do. I have never encountered them going after any healthy coral or fish.

"Red" dwarfs. Actually more orange than red and a teeny bit smaller than the scarlets I've had. I agree, I think I jumped the gun when I found half my exosphere polyps missing and two of the dwarfs on top of my "rescue" zoas (the ones I've been trying to salvage from the tank transfer zoa/shroom crash... So far 2/24 colonies looking like they are pulling through).

I found the missing expospheres and put them on a magnetic mount above the sand bed. I'll give these guys another shot.

Since you are starting almost fresh, I would suggest staying away from palythoas on your rebuild.
I couldn't agree more. I think palys are the one genera we could do without in this hobby. Although, I'm a sucker for a nice P. grandis :p

Same, I love the cinnamon grandis palys. Lost both colonies in the transfer :-(

But agreed @Jimbo327 , limited palys this time, and only on little sand bed mounds! I have a CK protopaly on the way, but other than that, I don't think I have any palys on the list, but then again not 100% sure.

See 12:28, Joe talks about palytoxins, how he go sick, and maybe killing some of his fish. Definitely run some carbon if you have palythoas.

In a closed system, they're not a good choice long term. Too many risks involved and not just inside the tank.
