Spotlight Special Black Death

Its time again for another Spotlight Special here at Reef Lounge USA! This week we will be showcasing a very interesting little coral that weve only seen once before way back in 2007!

Introducing the Reef Lounge USA Black Deaths (Neozoanthus sp.)!

The story behind these little gems starts quite a while ago back in 2007. About a year before the CITES ban on export of live rock from Tonga we discovered a small colony of what appeared to be jet black zoanthids on a small chunk of branching rock from that infamous collection location. Being suckers for anything unusual the colony was moved to a small display where they grew, albeit slowly even with regular feedings. However, due to a mechanical failure that wasnt caught soon enough, the resulting tank crash led to a loss of the original colony. Since then we have seen other people that also apparently found similar corals on their rocks as well, most of which date back to 2007-2009.

Those are cool looking! They kinda look like blue shrukien.

I can tell you from seeing them in person that they are much more grey and black than the photos show. Not much blue at all. Black is very hard to photograph so I needed to add a lot of light to get the details to show and as a result they came out looking lighter. I will take some photos when I get in tomorrow that shows the black color better.

So here are a few photos that show the color a little more accurate. Very hard to get a photo that shows the color exactly without sacrificing details. Black is difficult to photograph. Still a few frags available. Enjoy.
