New to mixing my own salt and was wondering why salinty levels vary from a fish only tank to a reef tank. It is my understanding that a fish only tank can sustain with a lower salinty level than a reef tank. I have a reef tank and aiming for salinty in the 1.024 range. Also does anyone buy RO water from a store or a dispensing machine? I am leary of doing this as do we really know if it is filtered properly but I currently have no choice. Hoping to set up my own RO unit at the house soon but have a few other things to work on first.

for a fowlr u can get by as low as 1.014 and be fine with no problems except for most of the small inverts in ur rock wont tolereate salinity that low so ur rock wouldnt be full with life just bacteria which is fine if its just fowlr, now if ur keeping coral u want as close to natural seawater as possible 35ppt or 1.026 sp however most guys are running 1.025 and there are some that run a lilttle lower

maybe i should aim for a bit higher in the 1.025 range. Is it dangerous for the corals if salinity drops, is anything in danger of dyeing? Im just used to using NSW and never had to worry about this.
