What type/style of skimmer? In sump or hang on back(HOB)?
If you're able to. Post pictures of what you have to give us an idea of what you have to work with. Or atleast brands and models.
Location could help too. Someone on here might show up and help you.

It's not that hard bro. just think of a tank(sump) under your display tank that houses all of your mechanicals, water flows from your display tank to your sump using a overflow box , or an internal overflow, and then gets filtered in the sump, and then gets pumped back up to you display tank, using the right kind of pump size.

A skimmer is even more easier, just put it in and plug it in, one thing though, make sure the bubbles in the skimmer are in the center of the neck of the skimmer, by using the adjuster or adjusters, and clean it once a week, remember when using a skimmer, it also eats up beneficial goodies like phytoplankton etc. so you will need to replenish you tank with goodies.
