I was going to try the acrylic rod thing ,but honestly I found it easier to just stack them and use a lot of epoxy .i just tried to hide the epoxy as much as possible .

The only problem i have with epoxy set is you have to bust the whole thing apart to lift it out of the tank otherwise its too heavy or dangerous reacaping or trying to catch a rouge fish
here is a 600 gallon tank i installed and the custom rock work i made, every thing is drilled and has fiberglass rods.
no glue or epoxy was used.
i took a pile of 10 box's of live rock and made this, here is some pix's
