I think this forum should have more and more quality articles about reefing. About reefing methods, about equipments, etc...
Instead of giving away prices, save that money and pay for people to write those articles.
Which those helpful articles, we will attach the new reefers into this forum. Meanwhile, make this forum a friendly environment so everyone feel welcome. I agree with hiring more mods, delete, control those comments that aggressive or have no meaning at all.
In the long run, we will have traffic again.

To be honest, I'm not seeing how SCMAS would benefit from this. We have a strong member base already, with board members (not paid), and do encourage trading and selling at our monthly meetings. We also put on Reef-A-Palooza each year.

A monthly frag swap / auction would get old in my opinion. Also, people like to sell coral at their leisure, on their own time. One of the benefits of the forums, aside from the sharing of information. I think having monthly get togethers for the purpose of trading and selling corals beyond traditional club meetings would get old for many.

By all means, set something up. I'd be one to attend most definitely. It would be a lot of work to arrange what your proposing.
I understand that you have your opinion, but the problem is, you are already knocking this idea.

I'm not saying that it has to be IEMas or SCMAS. I'm saying this would be a board of members from PR/SCR and would occur as a monthly meetup specifically at hobby related locations.

Auctions do not have to be for corals. They can be for *all* equipment. A container of dry fish food can auction at 1 dollar, and everyone bids until the price is acceptable for the winner, and then 10% goes to the board.

This is a small example. Other clubs have existed with this model and with great success. It creates regular views of the forum by members, and proceeds go not only to the board maintenance, but to purchasing end of the year large item raffles that members who attend the meetings receive tickets for.

Again, i understand that you have your opinion, but i am providing a proven-successful solution for existing hobby related groups that have had exactly this same problem.

SCMAS Club meetings are very inconvenient for a lot of people with the time set and location. Thats why having club meets or group meets at hobbies house and would benefit the network of more locals in that area, and when meetings happens they are more flexible on time of when it takes place, that would accommodate most in the surrounding area. Plus it would be more fun you get to talk about your tanks and show off. Social interaction is key to a successful forum as well.
Reefapalooza can be the Grand Meeting place.

Clubs:

For example clubs such as SCAPE (SoCal Planted tank forum has been doing this for years) they would collect $5 bucks/per member, the members would check in with their SN/Handles and receive a raffle ticket for contributing that 5 bucks. The money they collect goes to the host for food expense, food that the host will provide (pizza, and drinks, etc...) and for the club to use their place to do a meet. The rest goes back to the club in this case would be socalireef to help pay for hosting fees to keep the site going. And if any left over will be for buying prizes for the Grand Raffle Meet end of year.

The auction would be for giving a percentage back from the total of the auction to socalireef for hosting and prizes end of year and the rest goes back to the person auctioning what ever it maybe and a raffle ticket to whoever wins that bids for every $10 spent. At the end of the year for every $10 sold/auctioned or for every $10 you put in you receive a end of year raffle ticket at the grand meet or (reefapalooza) for a chance to win some prizes from one of the local sponsor (LFS) in return the LFS will benefit from advertisement and more foot traffic.

Prizes are no big deal as stated. Maybe for new people to be a draw to the forum. And for informative articles and videos I think we have one of our own. MikeJrice seems to regularly put up videos and I always find them informative and well done. All done I'm sure with his cell phone. No major production. No reason shops aren't doing this. Maybe get the vendors and retailers that advertise on here to make some of their stores and a product they're pushing to do one a month which would be helpful and also a bonus to get foot traffic in their shops. One a month should be suffice. When I was a kid I couldn't wait for FISH mag to come and I read it front to back including the ads.
It's a shame shops don't do their own thing. We rely on each other to do what they should be doing. johnwin84 makes me want to drive the hour to Corona to checkout some shop and I'm really just a FOWLR.

Do you want ideas to get more posts and threads started with more information and feedback from members or ways to get $$ for the board?? I'm seeing both and wonder are we going in the right direction with this thread. I remember the "glory days" of scr I would visit daily and see pages of new post then only see 4-5 post on RC socal section but now it seems like it's turning around and RC socal section is getting busy. Something must of happen.

the point is to create an active community and at the sametime funding the board and also create reasons to hang out and put a name to the faces, but if you don't have that you wont get ur glory days. But now a days people are on FB

I hear that there are groups over there that hang out and do Korean bbq hangouts and do monthly or bi-monthly runs to San Diego to buy fish and corals and eat at phills bbq or calicomfort bbq. Maybe forum sponsored events like that here would get our posting juices flowing ; )

Sorry I still don't have a FB account and not planning on getting one. So maybe Mike will chime in if he is seeing less supporters and start a thread on why members cancel.

My main complaint about the fb groups is that there is absolutely no structure, categorization, or formatting.

And to boot, while there is no limit on the private messaging, depending on the user's settings, there is a higher chance that a private message will not be received unless both users are friends.

With that being said, an improvement that would benefit the board would be to integrate the .phpbb instant messaging addon to this board, as well as the chatroom.

Granted, most folks do not access this board through a computer, so one of the developing apps on the horizon that is an alternative to tapatalk (which is a pretty crummy tool, these days), OR hiring/acquiring a couple developers who are well versed in java and mobile apps who could create a decent app for both navigating the board, setting calendars of events and allowing cross platform integration from them, and chat and pm options.

This is a big project, but this is also the age of the mobile device.

No one has done the above yet, and fb, an inferior product, is taking over the internet message board as a whole.

You specifically mentioned SCMAS and IHOP as if we are any way affiliated with SCR. SCMAS does just fine operating how we always have. I think your auction idea would be cool for the site, so not knocking it.

I'm confused maybe, SCR isn't a club. Its a for profit business.

Like how this threat created more traffic on the forums. There actually people posting love it!

EyeReef you need to be a lot more hands on to be honest. This thread is repeated about once or twice a year with little to no results. You can't just check in quarterly and expect things to change over night you know?

Socalireefs is a business, always has been. Revenue is probably down. This thread isn't going to change that. The ideas are great, but no one will follow through on them so its all talk really.

Btw subscription is built in with vbulleton software.
Which goes to pay for hosting monthly and VB software.
And mod aka plugins
Sponsor/Vendor subscriptions and premium membership. Its how all these forums generate revenue.
