You specifically mentioned SCMAS and IHOP as if we are any way affiliated with SCR. SCMAS does just fine operating how we always have. I think your auction idea would be cool for the site, so not knocking it.

I'm confused maybe, SCR isn't a club. Its a for profit business.
You are correct. I cited *MAS as examples, but stated that the consensus of the forum has established those as a standard.

They do not have to be. They should not be in relation to their disassociation to the board.

I think it's just the way the hobby has evolved. People aren't getting in for the love of the hobby. People are just chasing high end corals and selling them by the polyp. What people call a colony now used to be a frag 10 years ago. Seems like people are getting in to the hobby to make some money and not to build a community the way it was years ago. Who remembers this clown?

My biggest reluctance to participate is answering the same ? For the 20th time, or met with derision from the OP. Typically most OP are looking for someone to co sign or tell them their problem is fixed with minimal effort or $$$. Which tends to rarely be the case.

the clubs and the forum are totally different things... i'm in clubs that are over 80 years old and have nothing to do with any sort of forum or social media... they sorta both benefit from one another, but they don't need each other....

the truth is, forums are on their way out... you get more out of facebook groups, instagram and even email bulletins if clubs use them... i still belong to several forums, but the ones for plants, knives, bikes and other things are dead just like this one... |

also, new reefers are horrible, terrible people...

the end...

A monthly frag swap / auction would get old in my opinion. Also, people like to sell coral at their leisure, on their own time. One of the benefits of the forums, aside from the sharing of information. I think having monthly get togethers for the purpose of trading and selling corals beyond traditional club meetings would get old for many.

By all means, set something up. I'd be one to attend most definitely. It would be a lot of work to arrange what your proposing.
Why did the monthly club meets at Age of Aquariums end? I used to enjoy going there, met a lot of the people I know today. Heck met you there.

You are absolutely correct....

...about the use of fb over generic internet forums.

It is due to ergonomic accessibility, but not anything to do with function or form.

It used to be that any forum could be created using any generic forum builder, or a .phpbb version or similar, and within a manner of weeks or days competently run it.

That was back when smart phone users did not exist as a user statistic, tapatalk was a laughable curiosity, and everyone who accessed forums did so at work while they were bored and still watched Netflix on their computer.

Times have changed. Every successful online business has to have an app, even if they are a non profit. That app has to have movement (reasons to keep checking) such as calendars of events, important updates from the business, and flagging to relevant product (topics) from unique user data (keyword/followed threads) which notify the user of what they "want" or show interest in.

Facebook does this because it has the app and messenger app that so many people get.

I personally hate the fb app, and apps in general because of push notifications. But i understand that the great majority of smart phone users actually prefer them, and this wagging the dog is what draws people to social media groups on fb and reddit as opposed to dated and non integrated old school web forums.

I honestly do agree with this statement I feel the same both are platforms one does it differently then the other. I like using fb since I'm already on it, but I can't search for information about topics like aefw, or triton method. And I can't Google things in fb bc it's just chatter. Fb I can find sales and auctions fast.

Yeah I did too. But its a lot of work and those that helped put it together just got burned out, including myself. There weren't enough volunteers or those you could count on on a regular basis. It happens.

Reddit as a forum is a terrible mishmash. It is simply open source and has plenty of apps available to it that can make it ergonomic for the user. It's apps allow it functionality that the website alone only is a database for the client program.

EyeReef you need to be a lot more hands on to be honest. This thread is repeated about once or twice a year with little to no results. You can't just check in quarterly and expect things to change over night you know?
I think you are right. Maybe it's some Jedi mind trick to get more post. This thread is 4 page long!!

This hobby is not easy and for new reefers message boards are where we go to figure out what we are doing wrong. The problem is that everyones opinions do not equal results so who do you believe? I have gone in many wrong directions and have spent a ton on things that do not work well or take a scientist to quantify. I went from message boards to club meetings and met many friends I have today in the hobby. Now that I have been in hobby for ten years I can text a friend for advice, and I only except advice from those with results. I think the proof is in the pictures and making it easy to upload Photos direct from a phone would make posting much easier.

I can also say that having friends in the Hobby cuts through the hype and you do not have to go broke to fill a tank if you are generous with your growth. I have given away more than I have ever sold and there are plenty of us in the hobby that share. One mistake or power outage and it can all be dead so you better share so you can get it back without having to pay.

Anyway message boards tend to be for the new to the hobby and the Die Hards that practically never quit. This Hobby has got expensive which means less new people so we are left with the people who are busy with life and check in when they have time.

Effort, New Content, Easier interface, and fast! Just look at RC and how the tank of the month has not been changed in years, but Rev has got it going on at R2R. I get an email with topics weekly and keep getting pulled back in. So Calli is where the RC rejects have a place they can ***** about the DGENR8s on RC, or sell there Frag star start up BS.

Half the people who have got banned were banned because they were rude or posted commercially, with few exceptions do helpful Honda people ever get Banned???

Anyway I have left this board many times thinking what did I learn from 5 pages of Soap Opera Drama.

I agree with Cody why ask for what is needed if you are not going to get to work?

Reefing is just another side hustle? Im coming out with a tank sharing app.
that's what it's turned into IMO... aside from the old school homies on here... mostly everyone just wants to make a quick turn around... it's rare when i meet a "new" reefer, and he's actually down to try new things and talk fish and other things... instead, they struggle with a cookie cutter frag tank, frag tools and grow tiny bonsai style colonies because they're forever making hugo frags... LMFAO....

i just got back from hanging out with some hardcore plant nerds... all we did was talk about growing plants and maintaining rare plants... then setup some wicked trades tomorrow... and that's how it used to be at frag swaps... talk about our tanks, and trade crap we grew...

anyways... this board is 100% craigslist now... sucks, but it's because that's just how it is... want to learn something, you watch some youtube videos... i was looking for a mat to place under my new tank, and one google search and a youtube video, my laptop answered my questions... i could've made a thread, but when i do make a thread, no one answers or takes "me" seriously... wait, did i make a thread... i DID make a thread about it... the haiku thread... and not one of you answered my legitimate question... so screw you guys... i hope your tangs all get ick...

If im not having fun, im not even on here. It would suck if the need to make $ turned reefing joy into the Hunger. As I have no skin in this game, I buy from sponsors. Winning.
