I always try to get a springer's damsel in my tanks but hadn't seen any recently. Tong's Tropical Fish had 4-5 and I asked them to just get one that doesn't have a damaged tail but when I got home I noticed that the one the pulled for me doesn't have a pattern. It's on the larger side but I don't recall them ever losing their pattern. When I was looking at them in their tanks I noticed a pattern on most of them, so I am confident they had springers.

Anyone know if there are different locals? Or is there a not so friendly damsel that looks very much like a springers? It's got the right shape but just a plain blue vs the purple blue with a black pattern typically seen.

Not the best picture but to give an idea of shape. I just don’t want to release it if it’s a look alike, lol

It's funny how the thought of adding an aggressive fish triggers trauma, lol.

I was able to find a couple articles about springers and apparently the all blue no/little pattern are from the Soloman Islands. The black and blue patterned ones are from the Philippines and at one time were being described as their own species. The last article I read just showed them both as Cf Springeri with their locality.

I decided not to chance the Soloman Island locale since I have no experience with them, have a small tank and have 200.00 of established fish that I wouldn't want to get bullied by a 12.00 damsel. Tongs let me returning it so I picked up a hector's goby.

Now to find a Philippines locale (which is prettier IMO anyway)

I have 4 in my tank the all blue version. Model citizens. I bought them for flatworm control. I don’t have flatworms just a preventative. So I don’t know if they do what I want them to do.
