I’m lost on the contest too. Mr. 556 please explain. 😂
100% my fault.

There are 2 contests:

1) fun and cheep linear grow out $25 to get in, payout will be $15X the number of contestants (currently $150)

2) Bawler color up contest, it sold out in about an hour. $300 entrance with a $600 prize

The contest are going to run 6 months from October 1 just for ease, you can join either or both but the color up is closed unless I can get a 7th frag and then the prize would be $700

You have to take a and post a starting photo in the appropriate thread ( there will be one thread for each contest) on or before the Sunday the 17th of October.

You must post one progress photo in each contest thread for which you are entered every month.

You must post one introduction post describing yourself and your system in each contest thread for which you are entered during October.

You must provide your own plastic ruler similar to the ruler used in the last contest (inches and millimeters). you may reuse the one from the last contest.

Linear grow out contestants must position their frag in the same location for the duration of the contest, progress photos must be taken from the same perspective as the starting photo. I will decide the winner on overall length.

Bawler color up contest may relocate their coral. Monthly progress photos need to include one top down and one side view.

Bawler color up contest will be decided by vote of the contestants. Each contestant will cast a vote for the coral they find to be the best looking other than their own. I will cast a tie breaking vote if need be (I sure hope not)

Linear contestants will be measured but the overall length that has living tissue, if you start to STN or RTN, you get credit for what part is alive at the end of the contest,

Bawler color up contestants may submit any of their progress photos for the final submission. To be eligible for final submission, it must have been submitted as a previous month's progress photo or have been taken during the last month of the contest.

I might add some more clarifications but ultimately, the one contest is to see who can grow the longest coral and the other is to see who can get the best colors.

One thing I'm trying to quantify on the bawler contest is that it is a color up contest NOT a photoshop skilz contest. I'm chewing on photos being cell phone/ipad/ PaS device photos with no post production. Or, allowing DSLR with post production but require hosted copies in RAW of all submissions. I could use suggestions on this.

That one sold out in about 1 hr... I accidentally oversold it to 7 frags and I'm not sure I can get more than 6

you picking up at Steve's?

Hey, maybe, you can bring my test kit with you? I see Steve all the time.

If you still want it, I'll give him a replacement of that frag you got from me last year
Yeah I can get it from Steve. Sure thing.

Thanks! Which frag was that? LOL ... I've got limited room now.

For the color up, can you use filters? I suggest RAW files. Phones can process the pictures differently impacting image quality, and image can be manipulated as well.

I think filters are a given. And I don’t want it t be a “who has the best phone“ contest either.

I think phones with filters and any photo with post will have to be accompanied by the image in RAW format which may be difficult if you want to do post on a phone camera.

We all know that with enough photoshop, a dried out white dog turd can be made to look like a home wrecker.

Any post work needs to be done in pursuit of a true to life representation.

Why not judge during a zoom event. Each participant can use they phone with a filter to show the coral.... live. In addition to any submitted photo. You can then compare the two.

That would even the playing field a bit and I like the overall idea but I got a feeling it would be tough to get detailed images of the piece and schedules can be a pain in the ass.

There are two things we can do that seem pretty simple to me:

1) Day 1 shot and following shots need to be of the same quality. Can't take a blurry shit phone pic then bust out a detailed and adjusted lightroom shot for the final.
2) We require a new frag plug or white plastic item in the field of view so we can judge any color manipulation of the photo based off that.

There's more $ than previous growouts on the line but all in all if our frags survive we got a deal on em anyway and the pot will just be a bonus to that in my opinion.

Edit:

Another good way to get an idea might be a wide field of view top down shot, day 1 and final only. That way if we see some nuclear cyano, neon GHA/bryopsis or ALL the other colonies got so much more colorful we can tell.

How about using a white plastic ruler for the grow out and color up then. I found this on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Business-So...ds=White+plastic+ruler&qid=1602164059&sr=8-2

Perfect! I think everybody can get that one or if you have one of the yellow or maroon ones from the last contest they are acceptable too.
This discussion of the ruler to use reminds me of the Paris peace talks between the US and Vietnam. They wouldn't come to a conclusion on the size and shape of the peace talk tables.

When you're back from having yourself fragged, I need to be added to the list, paypal or cash, for pickup in anaheim from whomever unless someone closer to torrance can pick mine up... working nights makes it difficult for me to do anything during daylight atm

could I do a double growth entry? interested to see what happens in high nutrient LPS t5 tank, low flow (12 years established) versus low nutrient LED 2.0g pico higher flow (started in feb 2020)

and please give your tank perams, coral location, par etc (not that I know par in either of my tanks) prior to fragging pls.
