I am new to the world of a sump. I am upgradding from a 12 Gallon AIO, to a 50 Gallon cube with a sump.

My question is what do I all need to put in a sump. I currently have drain/sock and skimmer on one side and the return on the other side. What do I put in the middle section?? Live rock and Chaeto??

Thanks

Here is a picture of what I have

The cable box has to stay. I had to have the stand built per my wifes restrictions that the Time warner cable box and DVD player be incorporated into the stand. The shelf with the box/dvd is completely seperate from the sump section so no water/humidity gets to it. Is there another reason I would need to move it??

How are you going to do the maintenance in there if there's no space (clean the socks, skimmer cup, etc, etc), it will be humidity no matter what, evaporation will occur.

When I had the stand built, there was miscommunication between myself (my fault) and the builder and he did not realize I wanted that shelf added onto the height of the original stand and he just used the original stand height. The picture is a little misleading in that there is enough room (not a lot) to do maintanence. I can easily take out the skimmer cup and reach back to change out the sock. If there is a problem with humidity then I will add a fan to the back of the dvd compartment (there is plenty of room behind it).

I am a noob to the sump thing obviously and dont know all the maintanence required and if I have enough room. time will tell if I need to have a new stand built. Hope not.

Hopefully you have the space needed, I think it's almost like mine and I struggle, maybe in the future you will need some reactors, uv light etc. Hopefully you'll be okay.

I hope to be ok, but I fear in the long run I will need to have a new stand made.

Thats nuts! haha never seen AV equipment in a Tank stand before. How close is the tank to the TV?

Anyway.. You can use it for Chaeto but also use it as holding area for frags. Thats IF you have room to add a light capable of growing corals. Something like a Par38 will work..

The tank and stand are in my living room. I have a bigscreen on the wall over my fireplace in the middle of the room and the tank sits right next to it. On the other side of the fireplace is a window, so I had to keep the Cable box/dvd player right where I wanted to put the tank.
