Thinking about moving to WA or OR, any suggestions?

Hey guys, I am seriously thinking about moving out of this hell hole to either Oregon or Washington State. Does anyone have any experience with these 2 states?

A good friend of mine is willing to also make the move to keep each other company till we can settle into our new lives, but he really likes Washington for having no income taxes. Im looking at 2000 sqft homes for less than 200k in really nice new development areas and im thinking.... other than the gloomy weather, whats the catch? Nicer people? lower cost of living? cleaner air? None of these sound negative to me.

Been trying to pick peoples brains about the different areas or the two states and see where would be a good fit. I would probably want to live closer to the big cities wheres it more modern and up to date with the times, rather than the back road small town cities that you need to drive into town for certain things.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

I bet reefing in that area would be tough also what type of work do you do?

I guess this could have been put in the lounge, but I do also need to keep up with the hobby, might be a bit more difficult there.

Communications, working for Time Warner right now, but they all translate (TWC, DTV, ATT, etc.)

They are both beautiful. Its cheaper living there property wise but generally pay scales adjusts as well. Be aware that depending on what area you choose the word gloomy is am understatement it rains A LOT. Try renting for a year or so to see how you like it before you commit to purchasing. My wife's family lives in Woodland Wa, and Astoria, Or and we visit about once a year. Don't go for too small of a town because some places they don't like outsiders. If you like outdoors, hunting anf fishing you'll be in heaven. If you're willing and don't have anything holding you here then give it a shot.

Yeah im not so much into the small town idea, I love outdoors though and I really like the lush greens the northern states have, lots of pines and mountainous areas.

Both of these are very true.

We have family in OR and are working on a move. What I know of reefing up there is good news IMO. As you can imagine the scale is much smaller but there is a good community of reefers up there. I joined a Pacific NW forum to start making connections...I've met some amazing people through this forum so why not do the same for where I'm planning to continue my reefing journey. There are good LFS up there like we have here. Driving from LB to Rancho Cucomonga may feel short compared to how far I'll need to drive for frags up there but like anything life is a series of decisions with trade offs. We love the outdoors, aren't afraid of rain, want more for how hard we're working, want to grow our own food, and feel it's the right thing for our family. So I'm confident we'll be happy. There is a ton of things that still have to get worked out so I don't have a date but it's in the works.

Plus oregon has a higher pay rate than cali with a lower cost of living. Tax free in most counties, and smog exempt in a few as well if you plan on going all out on a car. Lived in oregon for about four years. I enjoyed it. Minus the rain that comes down so hard you cant see your hood with the wipers on full blast.

The job market in Healthcare right now is flush with jobs. I think you could find work in any state in this country right now if you're in healthcare. In looking for a job I don't know how many times I've wished I was a nurse or MD. I work in Project Management so my options are a bit more limited but there are surprisingly a lot of jobs around Portland. Truth be told I'd prefer somewhere in Eugene but Portland is a great city to be close to as well.

So..........will you still be able to help us out with our Apex?

Lol...yes. Two things will help...I've started using Teamviewer to remote into people's PCs and when fusion goes public A) most of you won't need me anymore and B) if you do, I'll likely be able to do it via Fusion. Fusion lets you setup other people with roles like View, Control, Manage etc which allows you to setup certain people with specific access. I wouldn't be surprised if Fusion went live around the summer time which is our target for departure.

The main thing im concerned with is cali is the only state that has mandated nurse-patient ratios (at least what ive been told from speaking with Nurse Travelers). Its something ill have to research more before we commit to moving. Living in Cali has a ton of peaks. ..but then you get taxed to hell for them...or at leaat that is how it feels

I couldn't agree more. The luxuries of living here come at a high price...both in money and quality of life. We're moving to take better advantage of both of those things. It's hard to leave here, especially being Mexican and moving to a place with very little of my peeps and culture, but my parents left their homeland to give me a better shot at life...I think I can do the same for my kids.

You da man Omar! Oregon / Washington / Colorado are all beautiful places and if you enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, it would be hard to beat them.
