Holy Crap!!!

I get confirmation this weekend that my new chiller would be here today.... it arrives.

I decided to do one last glance on the tank. I note the temp on the chiller said 78. the temp on the seperate temp probe said. 80.5 , and my heater is set to 77.

I remove the old chiller and setup up the teco.... (this thing rocks!) easy setup, shutoff valves and the whole nine yards!

I plug it in. it reads 68!!!!!!

i quickly grab every type of thermometer i have.... they all read 68-70....

so my chiller croaked, my backup thermometer croaked, and my heaters croaked!!!!

so here lies the problem.... do i let the halides heat the water gradually? or do i set the new heaters in increments...?

And i have a few corals that were my prizes that bleached!!!

the only good thing that happened is that my son was born friday!

First things first.

Congrats on your son.

Now, while you have fifteen seconds of time to concentrate, do the following:

Drop in a heater. Let it get accustomed to the temp then raise it a few degrees while you consider the following.

Part of me thinks the increase in temp up to norms would be OK even if you just set the heater and said "go!". However, I'm unclear and my best thought is that gradually is better than sudden. Again, though, the heater won't heat it all up in fifteen minutes, either, so... Not unless you're using nuclear rods for the heater...

I'd say you'd be OK either way... Sorry if that's not definitive enough...

welp,

i have a tri color valida that got hit hard. coralites are present but no color in the flesh of the acro, a few monti caps have bleached and a rather large colony of formosa is bleached bad. a miami orchid is not looking good as well. one ora blue/green tort is on the outs....

i am really bummed. I have a sunset monti that is showing signs of stress as well as a superman not looking well...

i hope over the next few days these guys work out ok

tank is 77-78 deg now.
