About 3 months back I upgraded from a 18w UV ster to a 55w. Then about 2 months ago I started having issues with all my smooth skinned sps. They slowly started slow stn’ing. I was wondering everything. I test alk every other day and wasn’t seeing any issues. Then started looking at my no3 & po4 levels and found that they were low. Started dosing potassium nitrates and got the levels to a desirable level. But still things aren’t looking great. Had an icp test done to see if there were heavy metals in the system. None at all. So I’m stumped. Then a few days back I saw a post on FB someone asking about the difference between 2 types of uv sterilizer on the BRS page. So I decided to take the new unit apart and check it out. The first thing I noticed when opening the top was the smell of plastic that sits out in the sun. Like a truck bed liner. So pulled the quartz tube out and drained the unit. After getting the water out I took a white towel and shoved it in the housing. The towel came out black and looked full of soot like.
Think that cheap plastic degrading is causing the loss of sps?

The black soot means that moisture got in and the unit was failing, but smooth skin deep water acros are a funny bunch. Either they make it or they dont

This is a common problem with those cheap units on ebay and Amazon. Most of them are not truly built for saltwater use. Mostly for ponds and freshwater. As someone else pointed out earlier pentair and aquauv are the go to brands for uv

I use a commercial 55w unit stainless steel which has giving me no issues what so ever. As long as it’s a quality moisture tight unit you should have no issues

The black soot is inside the plastic where the water runs. Inside the quartz tube where the bulb is is completely dry. I took the unit off line. Hopefully I’ll see a turn around.
The smooth skinned were the first to go. But now most acros are starting to base stn.

Oh I read that wrong. I thought you said it was inside the quartz tube. My bad
