I have a vlamingi tang. Hes about 10-12 inches. Hes in a 300gl tank and ive had him for over a year now.... started out at about an inch or two... anyway i noticed today that he has some bumps on his face. Completely different than ick. My water parameters are all normal. And all my other fish seem just fine. Just kind of concerned any help would be appreciated.

Looks like he caught the Herpes...

All kidding aside, are you running lots of carbon? Could be (HLLE) Head and Lateral Line Erosion or possibly lymphocystis?

Hey. Besides the things mentioned above. What’s your feeding regiment? Do you feed seaweed? Any new introductions to the DT? Any scratching against rock or coral? Have you noticed any change in behavior? My experience with those tangs has been a good one & they tend to be a strong active fish with a huge appetite, it’s the reason why I ask about diet & behavior. I am curious if you are housing any coral like an anemone (actually an invert) that the tang might have come in close contact with & stung itself with or aptasia, since tangs are grazers & can accidentally come in contact with stinging coral. But it does look like an external infection, i would add a cleaner wrasse to help clear & clean that infection or scarlet shrimp. The only other thing I can think of, is if your housing a rabbit or butterfly fish that might have extended its dorsal fin stingers while feeding & stung the tang. These are all scenarios I have experienced with my fish. One day they look fine & the next, they wake up with a gash because it fought over a piece of food with another mate or came close to a stinging coral. Just a few things to consider. Good luck.

I feed once a day about 5 times a week in the morning. I feed a combo of pellets, nori, algae pellets, and frozen foods. I do have a couple hammer corrals, i havent added anything to recent. I do have two bubble anemones. One's about 6-8 inches across when open the other is much larger, about 12-14 inches when open. I also have a foxface fish which has the poison fins. Hes much smaller than the tang and ive never seen any agression from either fish so maybe it was an accidental sting. I can't really add another wrasse or a cleaner shrimp. I have a large two spot wrasse who enjoys eating any inverts... ill check water quality/ salinity and advise. Thank you for your help

Just in case it matters my salinity is 1.020. PH is probably around 8.3. Ammonia is between 0 and .25. Nitrite is 0 and nitrate is between 0 and 5.0. So if im not mistaken that all looks fine...

your salinity is too low for a reef tank.. should be 1.025 to 1.026
