What’s this?

Any idea what this rust colored spot might be. This piece had been through the low salinity of 1.021, the all spikes, and some high temp issues (low 80’s) so I didn’t expect to survive and was definitely surprised it held on for as long as it did. Pulled the skeleton and plug today and noticed the coloring. Last ICP showed no elevated iron. I did send off another ICP on Tuesday to be safe.

I feel like I've seen some reef glues do that before from vendors. When I pop them off to dip a lot look just like that.

Could've been something in the frag plug itself or something from the glue.

I’m just a dumb dumb but I don’t think this is a rust discoloration. I’ve seen similar color patterns. I wanna believe it’s from trapped phosphates or bacteria that died. So like 14 years ago I had a 150 tall tank. I got a really bad GHA out break. I remember trying to pull of the patches of GHA and seeing a rust color discoloration on the rocks where I was able to get the GHA off.

But let’s be honest I could be way wrong and I may have had high iron in that tank. I guess the only way to tell what it is is to put it under the microscope

It very well could be an iron deposit, but a lot of animals utilize iron daily, so it's nothing I would worry about.

Agree with smite, pretty confident that it is a reaction from glue and that type of plug you are using. I use brs extra thick glue and have used it on disks that are sand and binder type that your showing in your picture and I get that yellow to deep orange color where the glue and disk meet. I do not notice this reaction on ceramic disks. I have not done a water change in over 5 years and have kept numerous disks with this reaction in tank for extended periods (3 + years) without any notable adverse effects. My opinion is that it’s a low risk concern. Hope that helps.

The glue theory sounds pretty logical. I wouldn't be too concerned.
