Hi,

I'm planning to add a pistol shrimp and goby to my 25 reef cube. Any suggestions? I was leaning towards a Yasha White Ray Shrimp Goby (Stonogobiops yasha) and Red-banded Snapping Shrimp (Alpheus randalli). If possible, I would like to hear from members who already keep a pistol shrimp and goby pair. I was also wondering if anyone has attempted to keep more than one shrimp (let's say two pistol shrimp) and one goby. Would both shrimp host in the same burrow along with the goby?

Thanks in advance!

I originally had a Watchman Goby in my tank and then I bought a Pistol+Yasha pair. The watchman goby took over the pistol shrimp and now both live under a rock. The Yasha hides alot and really finiky. Its said that if you are purchasing a Yasha, make sure that it is the first goby indtorduced in the tank so he/she can establish the teritory. Probably because they are really small. I watched my watchaman goby grow fast once he had a pistol pair and very protective of its buddy. The good thing about the pistol shrimp is they like to move/stirr the sand around and mine always changes the front sand door/opening of his rock dungeon. Pretty fun to watch, I always hear the sonic boom click's at night. Good Luck!

I have the YWG/pistol shrimp pair in my 24G cube and Randall's goby/pistol shrimp pair in my 40G breeder. The YWG has this permanent scowl on its face, while the Randall's is smaller in size, but has big guts - it raises its top fin anytime another fish wanders into its area. Both pairs are fun to watch.

I don't know what kind of pistol shrimp I have, has a big target on the side. But, it's the coolest thing. At first, I didn't like it because it always stays hidden except at feeding time or when it's dark and I'm using a flashlight to study the tank. But, in the 18 months I've had him, I've come to really like his cool personality! And the sonic booms - until I knew it was him, I thought it was the glass cracking somehow!
