What would make otherwise peaceful tangs attack one another? In my 150 (60"long) I've got a tomini, yellow, powder blue, and sailfin. I go to feed the fish tonight and my powder blue has had the holy hell beat out of him...so much that he's just swimming around the tank barely hanging on. I bet tonight is his last night. Yesterday he was healthy as can be.
Tank fish list is as follows:
2 clowns
1 Midas blenny
3 fathead anthias
1 blue chromi
3 flame wrasse
1 borbinius anthias
1 mandarin
4 tangs (mentioned above)
16 total fish...seems like a lot, but I've got a huge skimmer and sump, carbon, gfo, socks. Not worried about bioload...but evidently I should be worried about crowd control. Please share experiences/thoughts. Thanks

Sailfin is the established boss and biggest fish in the tank. Next in command is the tomini,

I will never buy a sailfin for that reason. Salfin tangs are aggressive as they get older. Mine killed my Naso and I sold it. Sailfins will get along with zebrazomas but not with other type tangs. Sorry for your loss. That's just my experience with them.

I had to get rid of my sailfin because he was destroying my YT. Gave him to chad for his big SPS system. Then had to get rid of my YT. Gave it to Chad for his SPS system. Now the Yt beats the crap outta the sailfin!

I agree. I've seen almost every tang I own turn to an ahole. Except the unicorn tang I have now. But Id bet it's only a matter of time.

There is always an order of zebrasomas which you need to follow to keep them from trying to kill each other. I had a sailfin, purple and two yellows for a very long time and they always schooled together. You just need to know how to add them and what size to get them.

LOL yes it can work. I too have had those exact same fish. for extended periods of time. you cant stop fishing from growing, and you cant regulate which fish grow at what speeds. I think the point to the original comment was all tangs can get aggressive

I don't deny that you just need one alpha to keep everyone on check. I always like to have a purple. They are mean but will not kill another tang just make him his *itch lol (again this is from my experience I have so many tangs lol) and there is actually a way to stop tangs from growing hehe ;)

Poor guy that bought your salfin, I hope he doesn't have a Naso. LOL
haha, he had a FOWLR as much I wanted to kill it I found a good home for it. Funny was that sailfin was challenging a queen angel, the queen won lol so he actually became submissive. It was cool to watch.

Petting a fish doesn't make it docile! It means it knows where the food comes from. The same yellow that tore up the sailfin used to like to be held. But I've never had a naso be aggressive towards other tangs. Although the blonde I had hated the dwarf angels I have. Chased them nonstop. They are fish. There are rules you can follow for better success but nothing is 100%

I have 4 tangs in a 150 as well. No problem with the naso or blue tang. The fin nipping is between the purple and yellow tang. The yellow tang is more aggressive at this point but some days they swim together without any problems. The yellow was added last and they are about 3". I had a sailfin tang awhile back, but traded him because he started nipping at corals. Good luck!
