im just looking to see if anyone has large colonies for the grow out contest that we are doing. any sponsors or members out there with a large colony of a nicer higher end SPS that they would be willing to sell to the mods for the contest please post a pic of what you got. need to make about 15~20 frags. just think this thread would be a good way for the players to see what we can get and maybe do a vote off of the pics. (i would say just email the price to the mods)

in the words of snookie... "im just saying..."

I have already spoken to Mike about this. I have something we could use, just waiting to hear back the verdict of if he wants it or not.
yah i though there would be some planning already going on but it was not clear to us so i though it would be cool to see what was out there. can you post a pic?

I have a 6"x9" colony of the ORA hawkins and a 6"x8" colony of the strawberry shortcake that could be used. I offered Mike and never heard back.

I'd say the shortcake is too sensitive. I'd use something like the Hawkins due to the moderate growth rate...
I agree with Shortcake, it is way to sensitive. Mike would have to charge Like $80 to just to cover the coast of colony.

Also not a great choice, this is a pretty sensitive coral to fragging etc...

Shortcake is probably the worst choice but its up to Mike in the end. You are going to end up with some brown *** SS frags that need at least a month to just get their color back let alone start growing.

I think the best is a hardy coral that will survive shipping and lots of fragging, but that is just my 2cents. You have to remember that you are going to completely frag out a colony to do this, so its going to stress out to a large degree. Most corals will lose color from this. The SS is one that loses color fast, so it would not do well with a huge over fragging. Just my input from what I have seen with this coral. Every Acro is not the same, each one handles the stress of fragging and shipping etc very differently.

+1

Shortcake frags are notorious for being brown and taking forever to color up. I picked up a small 1" frag about a month ago and it is just now starting to show some color on the tips. Better off doing the contest with something hardier, otherwise everyone's frags will be brown.
