Get a couple of friends and some beer:
Couple of friends, extra hands help a lot....
Beer, makes you not care as much when you cut a piece for the 3rd time and it still doesn't fit....

Other than that, best advise I have is to work from tank to sump with both drain and return. Easier to adjust lengths under the tank than behind the tank.

I like plumbing. It's all part of the fun and every time I get to do it, I feel like I am a little more efficient. But of course I'm a little anal when it comes to these things so I usually have a parts list, diagrams, extra parts and plan B's so it may just be in my nature!
