I've had a yellowtail fang blenny in QT with a copperband butterfly and a watchman goby. There was also a lamark's angel. The lamarks died night one. I know the yellowtail fang blenny is venomous but how does it go about using that venom? Is it defense only bite or will they outright attack and bite to kill fish?

I'm curious because I had been looking at the lamarks for about a month in Tongs, then night one it dies with me. I'm fully aware it could just be stress but started to wonder if it could have been the blenny? I want to get a few more fish QT'd and was hoping to sump these guys in my frag section but now I'm not so sure with there being a lawnmower blenny in there.

defensive only afaik

idk about the lawnmower, but my midas and my prior pair of kamoharas didn't know each other existed. like the benthic wrasses vs the fairy wrasses, just didn't pay any attention to the other

I’ve kept the striped fang blenny and it was one of the most chill and docile fish. Never messed anyone at all. Fangs only used for defense as Matty said. and at that it would have to be a pretty harsh situation for it.

Hey Matt, I have a (CB) striped blenny and they are super chill. The great thing about this group of blennies, is the fact that you can have multiples and they'll either group together or just get along. They are super cool and active swimmers and show no signs of aggression. In fact, my yellow banded possum wrasse has nudged his way through the blenny without issue. He'll actually move him with his snout and the blenny simply ignores him. I think a fish would have to actively harass it or go after it before they fight back, but each fish has their own personality. They are rear fanged, so they would have to bite the right way to inflict any venom.

so I could add another yellowtail, or do different colors and patterns get along within the same group of blennies?

Nice looking fish, looks like a harptail? Once you have the big tank going, you should be able to mix a few, but use an acclimation box just in case.

i actually asked eatbreakfast about mixing them and this is what he said:

so idk, i've seen people mix em up and i've personally kept two kamoharas together before and they never fought, but maybe i just didn't have them long enough for it to become an issue? or i accidentally stumbled upon a pair? but i also find eatbreakfast to be an amazing fish resource so i try to listen to his recommendations when i'm not being stubborn :D

Yeah, I would try them together from the start or use an acclimation box for a couple days. I've seen several tanks that have multiples and they get along just fine, but then again, that may be the exception? I think there's a tank at BRS that's a nano or 60 cube that has 3 striped blennies together?
