Save yourself the hassle and don't try to DIY it. For perspective, I tried to DIY a 20x20x12 frag tank and ended up spending $150 on supplies/equipment, about 6-7 hours of work, and still had to purchase a new tank and clean up the milky mess left from wet sanding splatters.

If you want to be 100% sure, my advice would be to take a Saturday or Sunday and clean out the whole sump. I've had aiptasia in an external overflow retract and show life after being outside for 5 days in about 1/8" of water.
