have any of you guys ever checked out the Hawaii spear fishing FB group? Those dudes spear piles of reef fish every day. I couldn’t believe how many they get in one trip. Sure, it’s for food, but is their diet 100% Tangs? lol

It put our hobby into context a bit for me. I hope the lift the restrictions on collecting or whatever it is that’s driving the price so high and availability so low.

I’m in Hawaii at the moment, saw lots of convict tangs. Then I remembered your post and scoured through a page and didn’t see much fish besides this one post that had like 5-6 yellow eye kole tang

I remember seeing an abundance of Yellow Tangs at my LFS. Now I see why they're not around as much. Hopefully, the ban gets lifted.

I talked to one of the local fisherman about the ban when I was there about a month ago. He said the people who are exporting fish for the hobby cast a wide net and catch everything they can, and ship out fish by the boatloads. Whereas spear fishing group take out far less fish out of the ocean comparatively.

Of course this can rub some people the wrong way seeing boat loads of fish collected everyday.

Courts found that the fishery was subject to Hawaii’s environmental protection laws, and as a result, a multi-year process of creating environmental impact statements and ongoing court battles began. The first assessment presented by the fishermen and then PIJAC (now Pet Advocacy Network) was rejected as insufficient. The revised environmental impact statement (EIS) was accepted and voted on with a 3-3 tie by Hawaii’s Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR), paving the way toward the reopening of the fishery.

The ban was in effect thru most of 2021. Then the Ban was appealed. But the fishery wasn't allowed to reopen till there were environmental impact studies (Costly), a plan for a limited number of licenses to be issued and establishing a controlled catch and monitoring system. Around Nov 2021 they went into court with a proposed licensing and catch control system, that in laymans terms was a report that would be the equivalent of oneof us proposing how our significant others shop for shoes and clothes. It was literally laughed out of court and they were reprimanded for the inadequacies as to what they proposed and sent back to the drawing board. Jump forward to this month the stay on the ban was upheld, in opposition of the envirnonmentalist group. - The jist of this being is that - Ornamental Fish can be collected in Hawaii, But no one is licensed (currently) to collect them and no standards have been established for the collection process, range and quantity. The ban(s) took place on different Hawaiian fisheries (islands) at different times over a few year period. I do not know if the lifting of the Ban applies to all the fisheries or just a few in particular.
