13,000 Gallon Outdoor Reef - Backyard Ocean

he mentioned not doing water changes, relying on dosing for trace elements. that's a lot of trace elements then when it rains he dumps a 50 gallon worth of salt in his surge tank to maintain salinity lol

SoCal Reefer has a 13K gallon outdoor reef. Has anyone been lucky enough to see this gem in person? Is he a SCR member by chance? lol

July 11 - Meet and Greet

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town, so won't be able to make it. But would love to see pics or slideshow of the tank build following the meeting! :)

What’s the best way to lower PH

You could use white wine vinegar, about 1mL per gallon. I've done it when dosing kalk to raise my alkalinity while keeping my pH from rising too high. You're probably fine running at pH of 8.5, many reefers would love to have a pH that high.

    Thoughts on Trident

Nice I'll give the Randy Holmes-Farley articles and read, thanks for the pointer! Also the KH Guardian looks interesting, especially at half the price of the AquaWiz. Curious to see how long it's been on the market and the long term reviews on accuracy and reliability.

    Thoughts on Trident

Not sure if this a generalization that could be for any/all tanks. Is this just an observation for your tank? I would assume an SPS or Torch/Goni dominant tank would have different calcium and magnesium depletion over the same alkanity consumption. I could be entirely wrong though.

    Thoughts on Trident

Ooof that Aquawiz is not cheap, it does look really nice not having to deal with reagents. Considering picking up of of the trident maintenance kits to get me through my remaining reagents. Then possibly switching to ABC reagents for ALK only. At which point, maybe the aquawiz goes down in...

I'm so surprised when people say this, mine is the tank bully. He's always fighting with my peaceful one-spot foxface lol

    Thoughts on Trident

I haven't had any bad WiFi experiences with Neptune, although I do appreciate they at least offer an ethernet port for hardline connections (unlike some of the other popular controllers). Interesting, I have had nothing but issues with calcium hanna checker, I can't trust the readings at all...

    Heads hanging from hammer

I'd be careful with the polyps that bail out, they can still sting whatever they come in contact with in the tank. I wonder if you put the bailed head/polyps into a mushroom box with a rock if you'd have luck with the head growing a new skeleton.

    Torches to Trade

Looking to trade some of my torches for some other pieces. Looking for LPS, Yellow Leather, or some mushrooms. 2-head Green Cotton Candy torch (green base w/ peach tips) 2-head or 3-head Dragon Tamer torch look-alike (purple/green base w/ green tips) 1 Frogspwan (purple base s/ violet tipped)...

    Neptune Reagents

Interesting, no I haven't, I'll have to give that a look. The reagents have a limited shelf life once they come in contact with oxygen though, right? At least that's the excuse that Apex gives as to the lower limit of the test frequency. I'd consider ditching the B/C altogether and just...

    Nightmare Fuel! Photos Attached!

Overflow looks like a great place for a berghia farm  Out of curiosity, what's the best way to clean the overflow and pipes if/when this happens? I'd imagine the overflow could be scrapped with vinegar or citric acid solution during a water change. But the pipes might be difficult if you...
