Clumping of your sand can be related to a very high PH north of 8.4, which if you are dosing with baking ash for your ALk will contribute to a higher PH than using baking soda . I would check you PH , which normally is one of the big factor if your sand bed is clumping or turning very hard...

A general rule is between .5ml to 1 ml per total gallons ( Display tank plus sump ) of each ALK and Calc per day. Higher use is needed for heavier SPS system. A very heavy SPS tank will exceed this if everything is growing well.
