Hi! Thinking about trying out some clownfish breeding. Anyone have any experience with it? Any tips? I’m thinking of either some frostbites or some black storms.

I’ve done it. Read as much as you can. Reefnutrition TDO is a great food choice and vendor for rotifers. Mercer Montana is great for sieves. I found keeping a rotifer culture hard so I just timed arrival from reefnutrition with day0 of the fry. If you go with TDO they sell it in different grades from really fine (A) to chunkier pieces. There is also a pulverizing tool out there where you can refine the cheaper chunkier TDO down but achieving the fineness of A is hard.

I tried the moonlight trap with little success. The best success I had was when I moved my clowns out of my reef, plumbed them into their own isolated 10g (attached to the reef) and then siphoned the fry straight out of the water column (replenishing water as needed). On hatch night- get it as dark as possible and only use your phone as “the moon”. You’ll have more fry release if there isn’t ambient light.

It is quite a lot to keep up and you’ll need a couple of separate systems, at least one for fry and another for older clutches that have gone thru metamorphosis.

It’s a laborious and rewarding part of the hobby. With designer clowns you’ll see all the different variants that make them who they are; you won’t just get a black storm from a black storm pair.

I have as well. I did it with a pair of Frostbites. It’s a labor of love and rewarding at the same time. I had my 7yrs old son helped me with removing the babies on hatch night.
The main thing is having live rotifers ready. That’s all they will eat the first week or so. Then, start with TDO size A, then size B. Like one mentioned above all will not be the same as the parents. I was surprised when I saw many orange and white colors in the bunch. For a second I thought she was cheating on him. Lol. But that’s just the gene pool.
Once the eggs are laid it will hatch 8-10 days later but only at night time. You need to shine a flashlight and check on day 8-10. They will gravitate towards the light. Scope them out with a cup. Place them in a separate tank with live rotifers. You need to change the water out everything two days to keep it fresh. The dead ones will sink to the bottom. You need to siphon them out when doing water changes. The strong ones will survive and move on to dry food. Good luck!
