Mines usually always open. They're filter feeders so they're constantly eating. Photosynthesis doesn't provide enough food for them

If you have a refugium phytoplankton and zooplankton can multiply and that's the main food source of these clams along with photosynthesis.

Some people put them on the sand if they have powerful enough lighting. People will also place them on the sand if they are afraid of them unlatching and falling on other organisms in the tank. However you can place them on the rocks if your lighting is less powerful or if it looks good to you and the clam seems happy.

I've heard that crocea, being rock boring clams by nature, should be placed on rock, and can actually be irritated or injured if placed on the sand bed. I can't say for sure, but that's what I heard.
My crocea is sitting in a depression in my rock work, about 3 inches from the water's surface, about 8-9 inches from my 150w MH, getting blasted with flow, and it's loving life.
