I've been running an Avast Marine Mutiny Ozone Reactor for a year+ now. The water is crystal clear -- I can see through 8ft of water, no yellowing/green tint whatsoever! The reactor was running at 30% of 200mV (Poseidon 200 Ozone Generator) 24/7 and I've been watching ORP and not inject more Ozones if ORP reached 450mV. I've been hovering around 390-410mV (wonder if it's a bad probe?). I've turned mine off for now as a process of elimination due to coral growth but contemplating to turn it back online. Ozone does mess with DOCs and may irritate fish gills if carbon is not used.

Anyway, curious if you guys are running Ozone and are you happy with it? What are the side effects, if any?

I have one, but not currently running it.

It's good to have if you need to polish the water or suspect coral warfare.

I'm getting a bigger housing for the desiccants.

The biggest pita is you’ll have to change out carbon every 2-3 weeks so me & my lazy ass don’t want to do this! Granted it’s fast to swap out the reactor, it’s another thing to deal with.

There is a small Sicce recirculating pump on the Poseidon reactor but I can bypass and go straight to the skimmer. One less thing to worry about.

So still on the fence to turn it back online — lol

Which unit do you have?

I have a giant BRS air dryer and my son has a commercial dryer to bake the beads.

This was my setup from a year ago

lol - my frag tank was practically empty last year vs now!

I'm using the same ozone generator. The poseidon 200.

For the desiccant...I'm going to the huge housing.

My plan is to only run my ozone for 10-20 minutes per night.

Well — I’ve just cleaned out and replaced my carbon reactor. It’s such a pain! oh yeah, took out the filthy ozone reactor and will likely just go straight to my BK skimmer, rated for ozone.

Guess if I only run ozone at 10% 24/7, I might not need carbon?

I have one, but never set it up ..
Without ORP metering, seems kinda dangerous.
I may get there some day. I have an APEX to meter ORP, just need the probe. Some day....

And this kids, is how you know you are a hoarding reef nerd .

^For a big tank like yours, ozone will cause crystal clear water. It all depends on how you run the ozone. Most people run it based on orp, so orp meter is very important. But you can also run it based on time, and the orp probe is not as important.

if you already have it, just plumb it to your skimmer and run it for 15 mins at night. Set APEX to fail off. And check to see if you like the result.

You should definitely do it — it’s a huge difference! What type of Apex do you have? My regular Apex EL has only one port and that was used for pH. I ended up with 2 more PM1 modules (1 for CaRx and 1 for ORP). In fact, I had 3 PM1 modules & ORP probe when I was doing sulfur denitrator — THAT sh*t is dangerous! It’s very effective at NO3 reduction but it can nuke your whole tank if you’re not careful. Perhaps that’s why not a lot of people do it anymore. Anyway, an ORP probe is somewhat informational but yeah — you don’t want to go over 450mV.

Edit: I’ve upgraded to an Apex A3 Pro recently so consolidated probes and added Salinity. Yay!

I spent an hour last night and ripped out the ozone reactor and went straight to the BK skimmer. It’s a lot cleaner look and less maintenance. Instead of a carbon reactor, I’ll just put a bag of carbon at the skimmer’s discharge. That will free up one huge section of the sump…

I have the EL but also have an additional PM1 for my CaRx..
Looking at your bucket photos you can really see the difference.
Eons ago, when I worked in a store, we used Ozone in the main saltwater fish system.
Ill probably give it a go once things calm down with my tank regarding the phosphate and cyano..
Small steps instead of doing everything all at once....
