Here’s what I wrote 2 years ago

me 2 years ago said:
I got my 21-3/4 X 28-7/8” 1/2” glass for my internal coast to coast overflow. That was a painstaking journey of about 3 weeks to find someone who wasn’t gouging me $175-$250 for it or wanting weeks to procure it. I really had no idea finding a sheet of glasscould be so frustrating but finaly found outstanding service from golden glass in Fullerton. 24 hrs and it was cut and polished to perfection, even has diamond cut edges $80 out the door

Where is that corner broken at exactly? Can you just cut it along with all the other panes, and make it a shallow rimless instead? if it's shallow enough, I don't think you would need the euro bracing

New 60"x24"x 3/4" thick panes will be very expensive, so I'd see if you can reuse and cut your existing ones and just make it not as tall

They don’t, they order it from a place, I think it’s in LA I wish I could remember where I bought the 24”X 32” X 1/2” I used in my peninsula but I think I only paid $85, thought it wasn’t low-e, it ended up being about $150 less than the best online price I could find.. IIRC, it was in Anaheim. Let me see if I can find those guys
Thanks for that info. I’ll definitely hit them up in the future.
But I already ordered a new panel today. There was a local shop here in moval that is only 2 miles from the house that offered the best price and quickest service. There price was $300 for 1/2” starphire 60”X24” all flat polished.

And will be able for pickup Wednesday morning b4 noon. Plus I didn’t even have to leave the house to pay for it. Every thing was done in 5 min after deciding to go with them.

The brake is on the top right. But I really want to keep the height of 24”. So I ended up buying a new panel.

But I did ask every glass shop if they would be willing to cup this panel up for me. They said they either couldn’t cut 1/2” glass or didn’t have the equipment to polish the ends.

I suspect that’s similar to what the guys I posted would charge. Just looking for reasonable retail price on the correct piece of glass… not some astronomical pie in the sky online pricing. I think you did good.

Ok next great idea had and let’s see how this plays out (can you sense the sarcasm in that statement, if not it’s there).
So now I have 60”X24” glass paper weight.
Well I never paid for the Eurobrace I just got a few quotes. So sense I have a 68lb piece of glass that is useless I’m going to attempt to cut the old front pain into strips for the new Eurobrace. So before you all say hey wait just have someone cut it for you. Well I tried. I called several glass shops and all of them said that they couldn’t cut it or didn’t have the equipment to polish the ends and really didn’t want to touch an old piece of glass. So sense I have to break it to toss it in the trash I might as well try to attempt to cut it. Maybe I can save my self a few bucks if I’m able to cut the old piece into strips for the Eurobrace.
So here’s the tools it looks like I’ll need to cut the glass and yes I already ordered them

Have you tried some of the aquarium manufacturers to cut it for you? Like Fujimotos, Aquarium master.

I have not but like I said I’ve contacted 7 local glass shops and they all denied to touch the glass. Two of them actually said they could cut the glass but didn’t have the equipment to polish it. I said well I’m ok with that. I’ll attempt to flat polish the end and then all of a sudden they really didn’t want to touch used glass and said we can definitely get you new pieces in the sides you need. I’m pretty sure I’ll get the same response from any aquarium manufacture. Plus the fact most aquarium manufacturers are so back logged in orders. I contacted CD to order a new tank and was told that it’s a 4 to 6 month build time.

If anyone knows a shop that can cut this broken pain into the Eurobrace pieces I can use I’ll definitely be interested.

Edit: so fujimoto aquariums doesn’t have much info. But aquarium masters doesn’t look to be an aquarium builder. They look to be an aquarium distributor and all there tanks look to be on the small side. Not one tank looks be over 110g. So I’m guessing none of there tanks are 1/2” thick glass.

That 1/2” (12mm) seems to be where none of the local glass want to go. I was told if it was 10mm or thinner they would have no issue cutting and polishing it.
I even said that this glass is useless too me if I can’t get it cut and I won’t be made if they broke it. But I’ll definitely pay top dollar if they could cut it for me.

7 professional glass companies turned down the work but you’re going to do it spending $75 on Amazon and a few youtube videos………

well, good luck.

make sure you wear safety goggles on the off chance that thalassemia breaks

Yep.

I know I never said I was smart. Shit doesn’t my tag say hate I’m just a dumbass truck driver

Yea the common thread is that old glass is brittle and harder to get to the run line. They don’t say it’s impossible tho and they say the glass gets brittle from years of sitting in the sun. Well granted I don’t know if this tank ever sat out in the direct sun, but years of sitting in direct sunlight. I doubt it. So I’m going to practice on a few old pieces of glass that I have sitting around. If it fails then maybe I send the running pliers back to Amazon and say they didn’t work for me I now I’ll definitely you the glass cutter. Im always tinkering with so type of project. But I look at it this way. This cracked pain is useless to me and why not attempt to strip it out my self. If I fail, so I’m out like maybe $10-$75 bucks and have to spend another $280 on Eurobrace pieces. But if I succeeded then I saved me $280 bucks.

Yea I know the great logic my mind thinks and guess what my lady stokes those flames.

I’m not trying to dissuade you, just having a little laugh at your expense. Hopefully you pull it off! Then I know who to come to when I need glass cut.

IMO, most glass shops are actually just mirror and shower door showrooms, it’s not like when I was a kid and there were lots of single glazed windows to cut.

I will tell you this from my own bloody experience: fresh cut glass is sharper than a razor and it cuts flesh deep and fast. You can break that edge easily with 100-400 grit sand paper. (Breaking the edge is a good thing)

Yea I know. If I couldn’t take a joke then I should take off my big boy pants with my big boy belt.

For real tho. I know glass is sharp af. I have thick welding gloves I’ll be wearing and safety glasses I get from work.

My plan is to use my 9’ belt sander with 280g and 400g belts to clean off the sharp edges and attempt to put at 1/8” bevel. Then I’ll take the grinder with the discs and try to polish the ends. This time being more temp wise.

Well my glass cutting equipment came yesterday while I was at work. So you know me mister impatient I need to eff with it as soon as I get home. Well here’s the kit

Scorer(aka glass cutter), cutting oil, and running pliers

So here’s the first piece of glass I’m going to attempt to cut. It’s a piece of the old Eurobrace

I start off by cleaning the glass with windex and a razor. Then after scraping off all the old junk on both sides I clean the glass again. Not the glass is clean I marked my line where I want the cut. Then I flip the glass over and tape the other piece of old glass in place to use as a guide for the scorer. I place the guide about an 1/16 inch to give the thicken of the scorer tip

After getting the guide in place I clean the tip of the scorer and make sure it will oiled and the wheel moves easily. After I know the scorer is good, I line the scorer on the line and put even pressure as I run the scorer along the glass. After the glass has been scored I take off the taped on guide and grab my running pliers. I place the line that is on the running pliers on the score of the glass.
This is the line

I then gently squeeze the pliers handle and snap!
