Hello,

I'm Damian aka Confuse. I've been out of the hobby since about 2018 after finishing grad school and getting a job. I recently decided to start up again after saltwater/coral videos started creeping up on my youtube feed the last year. My 150g LeeMar has been running empty for the majority of those years, but I've decided to go small and try to take a more economical approach to the hobby since I've noticed this hobby has gotten exponentially more expensive than the last time I was in it.

My current build is a Red Sea CUBE 18g with a Radion G4 XR15 Pro from one of my previous nano builds as well as most recycled equipment to keep the costs down. It sits next to my desk as opposed to in my den where I never spent much time at in the first place. I hope this motivates me to keep the tan running smoothly since I have to look at it everyday next to me.

My First Impressions Back (very limited and subjective):

1. Shit is expensive!! $40 for a skunk cleaner shrimp at the local LFS; Radions for $999!
2. Forums seem a bit less active; I know before I left Facebook groups were starting to increase in popularity
3. Smaller selections at LFS; been looking for a tailspot blenny for weeks at my local LFS and never see or can locate any; also noticed the selection of fish isn't as
large and some stock is being filled by freshwater
4. Diver's Den selection of fish suck! That's where I used to buy my expensive wrasses (RIP)

This is just very limited insight I have since I haven't ventured out there yet, but with the price of gas, I'm not looking forward to it like I used to, driving all over OC for one fish or a frag. I'm no spring chicken anymore, I guess.

Anyway, glad to see some old faces still around! Please feel free to give me some of your insights and any tips you may have to keep this hobby a little more affordable and sustainable.

Mandatory ugly fish tank shot. Ignore the diatoms, trying to get silicates down after not cleaning the live sand.

welcome back! If you're willing to make the drive, it looks like reef factory in Placentia has tailspots. they posted their fish stock today.

Stuff has gotten expensive, but you'll be able to find deals here and there. also let us know what you're looking for. you might find awesome deals or even free stuff from some of the cool reefers on this forum.

Welcome back! It’s all relative right? I used to make $11/hr in 2018 and now rolling in at $18/hr so woohoo! Add in OT and these Radions look very afford to me… ;)

To make it even more affordable, I would haggle with Jose for 6hrs (like going to a car stealership) until he gives me a discount! lol

Happy reefing

First of all, welcome back!

Yeah, you are right, the prices are significantly higher. It was pretty shocking when I got back into the hobby...post pandemic...it was just bonkers. But I think there are still smart and economical way of reefing...by making friends on forums and meeting up with other reefers socially...you get a lot of great deals. We are very lucky to live in SoCal. We have access to a lot of fish and corals.

It's smart to start small, and see if you really enjoy it. It's nice you have a lot of experience and equipment already. That should really help with the wallet. Shipping has also gotten very expensive...so has salt and everything else.

As far as the forum, it is as active as its members. But it's a great source of local knowledge and help. I always enjoyed a local reef forum because it feels more personable. I would love to see a build thread and see what you put into your 18g.

Welcome back!
We just jumped back into the hobby about 2 years ago too, with a much smaller setup. We had the 135g, and now have a 45 JBJ.

Nice to see you back!

Welcome back.

The tank looks great, and it appears you have some high-quality equipment. There are many great reefers here. You should be able to find good advice, used equipment, and affordable corals on the forum.

Welcome back! I'm also getting back in after like 9ish years. I'm having a 180g installed Saturday. Super stoked. I was also shocked at the cost of everything (3X more?) along with way less activity on these forums.
