can someone give me an idea as to how much salt mix is needed for a 5 gal container....trying to figure out if this is going to be less expensive than buying it at the LFS.....if I buy a 55 gal salt mix (Red Sea Coral Pro) how long will that last me if I have a 60 gal tank.

no I don't have an RODI.....can I just buy drinking water and mix it in?
There would be no point in that. Bottled water is loaded with crap you don't want in your tank. I speak from experience as a while back my mother was watching over my tank while I was away and ran out of RODI in my jugs... so she decided to dump about 10 bottles or arrowhead. I love her to death but I cannot tell you the hair algae outbreak I had soon after. Don't do that... just continue to buy water from the LFS if you don't want to invest the money which you really should.

Stop buying livestock and buy-

1. Refractometer
2. RODI Filter for making RODI water
3. two Brute containers, one for RODI and one for your mixed salt, couple bulkheads, float switch, and some maxi jets to move the water around.
4. Bucket of Salt

Total Dissolved Solids

People strive for as close to 0 TDS as possible... for instance your tap water might be at 200 TDS... RODI water from shady fish stores is in the 60 range sometimes, etc. You cant trust anyone but yourself.

wow sounds so complicated.....maybe I should just stick with buying the water at the LFS....LOL....how much is an RODI system anyways?
Depends on how many Gallons Per Day you want, but somewhere in the 100 to 200 dollar range for a decent RODI system.

Which LFS do you go to for your water?

no I'm going to buy the drinking water from water store not Tong....I only buy the premix saltwater from tong as I have....but I've learn now that mixing is a lot better because the nutrients in the salt mixes is more abundant than buying premix water from the LFS....

I see, well definitely Get a TDS meter.

The only major differences in salt mixes are the amounts of cal, alk, and mag. Some LFS sell Catalina water or Natural Saltwater, which is low in all three and is usually sold for less as compared to for instance Tropic Marin or Red Sea to name one or two. Some mixes have more calcium or alkalinity, etc. To each their own when it comes to that. Its finding your balance and sticking to a routine is most important.

Stealing from Greg Carroll, "SPS- Stability Promotes Success". By adding things quickly and not getting a handle on proper husbandry and water quality you will have a tough road. Our hobby is challenging enough...

got it....I've been dosing everyday so I've been ok wanted to see if I can save money in mixing but it looks like I'll be spending more to get the right stuff to mix the salt water....I thought it was as simple as buying purified water and adding in the salt mix..
