Pains me to say this, and not going into details, but I will be shutting down the office tanks soon. Thankfully, my lovely wife sees my distress and informed me in no certain terms that she might consider the possibility if I'm very good that we potentially could get a seahorse tank at home. I'll take it!

But sadly, that won't be in time to help my reef tanks, and ponies are incompatible with most of my corals/nems/fish in any case. I'm enjoying the time I still have with the tank, but it's looking like end of November I'll have to list things and get ready for the breakdown in early December. My primary goal will be good homes for everything.

I’m sorry man, I could possibly be in a similar situation before the end of the year.
Get back in when you see the opportunity, heck maybe convince the significant other on a upgrade when the time comes!

I like the way you think! I just finished emailing Joe at Glass Cages to get some ideas on a cube tank in the 60-90 gal range for the ponies. Just hope I can save some of my wrasses and maybe the CBB (if they are even compatible).

Dang, this is unfortunate. You put so much effort in setting up the new tank too.

Hope you are staying in the area and will restart after a short break. Who knows, maybe the wife will allow a reef tank if you are super good for Christmas! :)

And and...where am I going to get white worm cultures from now on?

Take care.

I'm not going anywhere! I just have to take down the office tanks. I can bring a RE-starter culture to the office for you anytime :)

New build is happening. Not 100% sure when, but putting out feelers and doing lots of reading on keeping ponies. Long term plan is to get pipefish and, most importantly, garden eels. Garden eels have always been my dream tank!

Sorry to hear and I wish you luck during the transition. Garden eels are tough, from what I've read, but that was a while ago. Seahorses are also challenging, mostly disease and bacteria, which plagues them quite often. Make sure to do plenty of research on the little ponies (which I'm sure you've done already). Best of luck!

Thanks! Yes, loads of research going right now. Looks like I may have to bite the bullet and finally get a skimmer, as much as I was holding out.

Bummer - sorry to hear that but look at the bright side, you can build a big, bad setup at home! You know — cars don’t need to be covered in SoCal — just move all your office tanks home to the garage! ;)

Sorry man, that sucks.

If you need any resources for seahorse information please let me know. I helped run Seahorse.org for many years and have kept and bred many species of seahorses.

Key things are seahorses need lower temperature tanks. 73F is tops. For the same reasons they need 73F tops, they do not often mix well with other species of syngnathids for extended periods of time. It's a bacterial thing. So seahorses and pipefish together long term can be problematic.

Seahorse tanks do better when there is a lot of flow, the flow just needs to be broken up and oscillating. My best success was two spray bars under the rock work that alternated every two hours during the day.

Buy CB seahorses. Turns out to be much much cheaper long run then if you have a WC seahorse who never takes to frozen food and you are out buying 12 live shrimp a day to feed them for 8 years. (Ask me how I know).

Wrasses and seahorses can be tough to keep together. They have different eating habits but enjoy the same foods. Really depends on the species of wrasse and how much you are willing to feed. I wrote this up with a friend a few years back, it might help with some tank mate ideas- We actually surveyed over a thousand seahorse keepers and logged experiences for most of the fish/coral listed. It was quite a project, took a few years.

https://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/tankmates/tankmates.shtml

Really, if you decided to get into them, I am happy to help if I can. If get CB, keep them in a cool tank, have good water movement, and have appropriate tank mates seahorses are very easy to take care of. Really fun fish with personality too.

Didn't realize you were part of this page I've been scouring for a week. I'm in research mode, so happy to send questions!
