Just having all of that space to work with is the greatest part. Looks great! Are you going to do a remote DSB?

I’m still debating but leaning towards having one since I removed the sand from the display. I’m thinking if I shoot a 90 elbow on the drain lines that’ll keep flow towards the top, give good flow and possibly allow for a sandbed in the fuge section

The AA PVC hybrid sump is built like a tank, but the top bracing is taking quite a bit of valuable space. I like the open space of your new sump. Personally, I think the AA PVC hybrid external refugium is pretty dumb (I have one), they should have just built it in the same sump and be done with it.

Here's my reference to deep sand beds. You might be able to find Ron's booklet used on amazon?

That's kind of how I feel about it too. I think it was taller that the sump as well and my stands so short that wasn't an option for me. The hybrid is cool, like you said just needs to be simplified and add the fuge into the sump itself.

I've decided I'm going to run sand in the fuge section. It sounds like the majority should be a fine grade sand, like Oolite/Sugar. Is that what you're running or did you mix any type of fuge "mud" in?

Nice, oolite is the way to go and you shouldn't mix sand grades, as this will make the layers less functional. You could add a fine layer of mud or seeded sand on the top, but just a dusting. If you find any spaghetti worms, grab them and put them down there, along with bristleworms, etc..but no sand sifting critters are allowed to disrupt the sand (like conch, nassarius, sand sifting stars, etc). Indo Pacific Sea Farms offers a kit that has worms, live sand, etc that would be a great kick-starter, but it's not the cheapest. I'm actually going to order some soon that I can spread between my two systems. The key is getting the flow right, not too much as you want the detritus to settle in the first chamber where the DSB lives.

Got the essentials up. I’m really liking this sump. Simple but small things that help organize and a guest fitting in the fuge already there for effluent. I need to strap the drains still somehow but so far no leaks and pretty quiet. Calcium reactor will be front left corner I think.
