This thread is for $300 buy in "bawler" color-up contest. Participants only. If you didn't buy into the contest and feel there is something that needs to be addressed, PM me directly. Do not post in this thread.

If you are not a participant, keep tuned, I think you are going to see some pretty awesome looking corals. feel free to "like" posts but let's keep this thread to the participants.

At this point there are 5 paid participants and the prize payout is $500. There is the possibility of adding participant(s) up until midnight October 17 2020.

Final submission must be made during the 7 days before April 1 2021. You may submit any of your previous months progress submissions however you must provide a last month submission to prove your coral is still alive. If your final submit is a previous months submit, you must supply a link to the post in which it was submitted along with your submission.

Winner will be chosen by a vote of paid participants. Each paid participant gets 1 vote and may not vote for their own coral.

Voting will begin on April 112:00AM and is closed on April 7 at midnight. In the event of a tie, I will make the deciding vote (please don't do this to me)

Guideline: vote for the best looking one, if everybody vote for the ugliest one or middle one, that guy will win.

"Photoshop" Post production may be used however it must be used to recreate an accurate reproduction of what has been visually achieved. If you use post production, you must accompany any image submitted with the RAW image the submitted image was made from. Complaints about "over-shopping" should be submitted to me and I will evaluate and may request that you re-submit a more compliant photo. Gross over-shopping or repeated violations will be kicked from the contest and no refund. I just don't want to deal with it.

Guideline: If you are attempting to faithfully reproduce what you see, you'll be fine. This applies phone images as well.

You must submit 2 photos of your coral before midnight October 17 2020. One top down and one side view + accompanying RAW photos if applicable.

You must submit 2 progress photos of your coral in the last 7 days of each month. One top down and one side view + accompanying RAW photos if applicable.

Guideline: Only submit photos of the provided coral and you will be fine. Corals do not have to stay in the same position or even the same tank, photos may be taken in a photo box.

Guideline: This is a color up contest. the function is to see who can get the best color from the frags provided. It is not a Photoshop contest.

Introduction: You must post one introduction post describing yourself and your system in each contest thread for which you are entered during October.

Guideline: Tell us who you are and what you are doing, let other reefers know what's working well for you. spend some time and make a nice post with FTS.

Happy Color Up Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!

Guideline: Have fun!

Hi,
I am excited to be part of this contest! I started my 1st reef 20+ years ago with an early 32g AIO using compact fluorescents. I was happy to grow mushrooms and GPS . I then took about 10 years off when work got in the way (lots of travel). I re-entered the hobby with an impulse buy of a Waterbox 75.2 I found on Amazon. I ran the tank about year or so before I decided to go all in and build my dream tank a CD 180 which I will be using for this contest.

- Crystal Dynamics 72x24x24 Starfire with Stand
- Trigger CR44 Sump
- Lighting is a T5 Hybrid using five XR15 G4 Pros running modified AB+ and four T5s (B+ Actinic, C+ B+) 10” above waterline
- WaveEngine with four Octo Pulse 4s at opposite ends
- Bashsea 8-24 Twisted Skimmer
- Geo CaRX with Kamoer Dosing pump
- Full Apex (I am a gadget geek)
- Alkatronic (love this!)

The tanks cycled started on April 15, 2020 using 100 pounds of Marco rock and 50 pounds of live rock bought from a local reefer. I am Running complete Zeovit ULN system using a Avast Marine Vibe reactor for the stones. My target parameters are dKH 7.5, Ca 420, Mg 1400. Nitrates run < 3 and Phosphate <.02

The tank is still young, but the coral is growing well and coloring up nicely. I don’t have a lot of fish. It has always been about the coral for me.

1 Powder Brown Tang
1 Yellow Eye Kole Tang
2 Yellow Tang
1 Purple Tang
2 Squareback Anthias (male and female)
5 Blue and Yellow Damsels
1 Maroon Yellow Stripe Clownfish Yellow Hosting an RBTA

I am looking forward to this contest since I am working from home and have a lot of tank time. Watching coral grow is like watching paint dry , but what do you do during this pandemic?

Lastly, I want to give Mark a shout out for putting this together. Thank you.

Let the games begin!

Looking forward to this one, best of luck to everyone. I'm glad we are keeping these going, big thanks to Mark for chopping up 2 of his colonies.

Current system:

180g 6x2x2 Mode
-Calcium reactor TLF rebourne course media
-I've just been dosing daily traces from moonshiners, trying to save on cost of the tank right now
- recently swapped to 3 x g5 xr30 blues running ab+ @ 80% with diffusers, from MH/t5. Uptake increased, so I'm happy
-I'm a big believer in tons of flow - tunze stream 3, 2 mp40s and a gyre 150/250 combo. All pumps max out at some point during the day
-I run a chaeto reactor 12 hours and refugium opposite 12 hours
- UV 24/7 aside for a few hours after dosing MB7 or other bacterias
- no water changes except for selling corals
-Carbon and filter floss for water clarity
- oversized skimmer

Alk - 9
Calcium 410-420
Magnesium 1350
Sg 1.025
Temp 77.5-79F night/day
Nitrate 20-25ppm
Phosphate .3-.45 (started to try to bring it down but seemed to cause instability, now i say screw it)

Hey, how's it going Matt? Are you planning to keep this tank up until the end of this contest or will eventually move everything over to your new 75g?

Going good!

I'll be swapping part way through. I'm trying to get it done asap so I have a chance in both these contests.

Yo @sorinwilcox I know tongs has quality ones. End of salt and dosing elements isle towards live stock. Just be careful, most are acrylic so only set then down clear side up or they scratch super easy.

Hi All,

I wanted to give Mark a BIG thank you for hooking all of us up with this old school piece and creating a color up contest for us to have some fun. =) Even though the frag we got already looks good from the start. It will be interesting to see it develop under different setups over the next 6 months. I’ve kept this RR Rainbow Blossom in my last sps tank before I took a break from the hobby 4 years ago and it was one of my favorites in the tank. So, when I saw Mark offered up his colony. I had to jump on it.

My current display tank was set up on Nov. 2019 and the cycle began with dry rock (aquaroche) and ceramic (marine pure and Brightwell xport) media. Did the 5 month no light cycle and began adding corals to the tank in May.

Crystal Dynamics 100g - 48x24x20
Trigger systems 36
36” ATI LED Powermodule - 4 blue+, 2 actinic, purple+, coral+
48” Orphek Or3 blue plus LED bars
Vortech MP40 Quietdrive
Versa dosers
GHL Propeller fan
Avast Marine auto feeder
Avast Marine kalk reactor
Reef Octopus skimmer
Neptune Core return pump
GHL KH Director
Aqua UV sterilizer

Dosing Coral Essentials Calcium, Carbonate, Magnesium with trace elements and some of their other additives.

Have 11 fish in my system. Orange storm clown pair, lyretail anthias pair, 4 line wrasse, springeri damsel, gem tang, blue tang, helfrichi firefish, marine betta, tomini tang. Feed 4 times a day. LRS frozen and a mix of dry food in auto feeder.

Tropic Marin Pro Salt 10% weekly WC
Alk 7-7.5
Calcium 420-450
Magnesium 1300-1350
Salinity 35 ppt
Phosphate - .02
Nitrate - 2

GL and lets have some fun my reef buddies!! :)(y)

Rainbow Blossom. :)

Doing a WC today and while scraping algae. I accidentally broke off the main branch. sigh... I mounted the broken branch right next to the main frag so down the road. They can fuse back together again.

Just to be clear, it has been brought to my attention that I was clumsy in my writing of the rules. You have until midnight tonight (Saturday) to post your "first day" photos.

I know some people work a lot of hours, myself included and I wanted to be sure everyone had an opportunity to take their time positioning and photographing their coral.

During October for the introduction was because I wanted to allow people time to do a nice write up introduction

No need for a ruler for the color up contest, this contest is strictly for aesthetics.

My entire colony started from a nub but I measured and ever frag I issued was at least 1" multi branch. This should be good.

Remember, you get to submit one set of photos every month for progress but can submit any of the previously submitted monthly photo sets for the final judgment so take the best picks you can every month.

The last submission just needs to prove your coral is still alive.
